Advice needed

Recommended Posts

Howdy, can anyone spare a few minutes to help me plan a new installation...

I know nowt about plumbing in Stereo's etc. and have a couple of questions that I'm sure someone out there could answer...

I have a car that has no current CD Player / Stereo etc. the car is a classic so I don't want to mount a CD Player in view, nor do I want chop the inside of the glove compartment to peices... so I was thinking of the I-POD route... Stick Sub in the boot with an Amp, feeding a further 2 pairs of speakers... question is do I need a pre-amp to (or what kind of amp) do I need to use an I-POD (or similar)...?

Any help much appreciated.

Has the head unit got a radio ? If so you can connect the iPod to it via an iTrip. Errr it not legal to use in the UK as it can broadcast several feet on a large range of frequencies and this could upset some boring licence thing, but it works well ( so I have been told ) and you wont have to cut any holes :-)

Cost about 30 quid I think :-)

Cheers for that, I'm aware of the IPOD transmitter but that's not the solution I'm looking at. There is No! Head unit or anything else for that matter in the car!

I have 2 Shelf speakers for the rear and 2 Satellites for the front... I want to mount a small 12" Sub in the boot, I will also place an amp there to run all the speakers... from the boot I want to run a single lead to the centre console where I could connect an IPOD or similar, question is I don't know if the best way about or more to the point, do I need, to install a pre-amp to boost the power for the IPOD..??? confused.gif

Umm, from what I gather, the iPod will plug in like a CD player does to a head unit, so I guess and you need to check that it doesnt need anything. With the iTrip you need less :-)

If you just want to amp the iPod, then I guess theres some options, but most are for home use, so not so sure about power etc, but worth looking at a few iPod sites as there should be any easy option there somewhere :-) Post some pics when you get it sorted as it sounds like a nice idea.

Wiring shuld be easy as theres normally lots of places to hide wires in cars :-)

Dodge, i'll try and hook my ipod up to my amp tomorrow and give it a try. The only problem you may get, the amp requires a remote turn on, which usually the HU provides, but with just an ipod you'll be missing.

Hey Snail, that would be really helpful, cheers. If it's a big thumbs up, let me know what Amp you have etc. As for powering up the Amp if it's mounted in the boot I was thinking that if it's wierd with the ignition through a spare fuse opening etc. it will come on with a turn of the key...?

And mjcb, thanks for the advice but I'm already well aware that it's a Negative Earth, give me some credit! I my be a dumb f**k about ICE but have more than half an idea how my car works! smashfreakB.gif he says! now watch, next week I'll do something idiotic like replace Transmission oil with Enngine oil or something suicide.gif

Thanks all..

Dodge,

I just hooked my ipod up to my amp with one of those rca->headphone leads. Now, the gain on my amp (an Alpine V12 5 channel jobbie) is set to normal, and id say the ipod (at max volume) was 60% of the volume of my car stereo (at 80%).

With the gain on my amp set high, the volume was comparable to my car stereo. I think it will be down to the particular amp, as to how high you need the gain, and whether you'll need the preamp.

Bear in mind, most premuim amps these days are designed for 5v+, so if your going to do the job properly, you'll definitely need a preamp.

Snail, can you link one ipod to another and swap songs?

We have a friends son who is getting a mini ipod for his birthday on tuesday and we want to get him a link cable if it is made

[/ QUOTE ]

No, but there are various utils available online, that allow remove of songs from an ipod, so you just copy them to your pc, then attach the other ipod, and copy onto it.
