Dave
Just wondering what most people are running now-days.. I've 1 gig in Ram and 200MB hard drive.. with memory so cheap at the moment I'm thinking of going the full hog to 2 gig RAM.. would it be worth it?.. I'm running a P4 at 3.00ghz
Frodo
Not sure it would actually make any difference unless you are doing video editing, dtp, etc. Have a look at taskmanager and see how much memory is committed.
Mac
1 to 2Gb? Nah not worth it really. I run 2Gb but never noticed when I upgraded from 1Gb. The only time I see any advantage is when I have multiple VMWare sessions running. In terms of hard disk space.....In my main PC I have 6 x 250Gb and then another 2 x 250Gb hanging off the USB ports...So that's.....lots! I'm always juggling space too....It's mostly data from my client's that I use during design work and stuff. I.e. you have one set of data to work from but you do need another for when you feck things up.
CarMad
What happened to posting IT things in the IT forum.. tut tut. I would say that upless you have a load of very large applications open at the same time it is a complete waste. If you play a lot of games then maybe but even then only at a push IMO. I have 512mb and run a lot with no problems whatsoever. I also use a machine with only 256mb and as long as I don't open too much then again its not a problem. Frodo
Are the disks in a RAID configuration? Raid 5 or just stripped which I think is RAID 3. Wouldn't it be better over Firewire or off the disk controller rather than USB which I believe falls down on continous writes/reads
Mac
I change the disk - configs depending on what I'm doing at the time. Not really that bothered about performance to be honest - it's just big bad storage! Also, it's evolved rather than formed out of any direct planning...you know how it is! I'll be upgrading my home stuff in the next couple of months - as I only usually have one PC and a laptop I'm going to put together some form of NAS over 1Gb Ethernet...seems cheap & easy. Frodo
I have thought about something similiar, having a central server with storage and then using wireless for the laptops and workstations around the house. Just haven't got around to it. It is silly really sometimes my partner and I just sit with our laptops doing, work, surfing, etc with our laptops sitting next to each other. I think it has taken over from the TV, I will really start to worry if we start communicating via IM
CarMad
Sounds familiar. I can be upstairs in the office and my other half downstairs and she will MSN me to ask me things. I must admit I am also tempted to get a storage unit in place in my new PC. Make it supper quiet and leave it on all the time. I can't stand noisy PCs.. not sure what to get yet, I post of the future I think.
Frodo
I was thinking of getting a cheap generic box and sticking it in the garage void or loft. Then use wireless to connect to it. I have Netgear AP's in repeater mode and 5dbi antenne works a treat all over the house and garden
CarMad
I have 54 wireless around the house.. Good idea to put it in the loft. Could install a webcam then and send the images to it.. you never know what you might capture.
Frodo
Yep sounds like a very good idea. Could put in a RIBLO card and then you could shutdown and reboot from your armchair. Hmm maybe I am going slightly over-board now.
Mac
Fear it!!!! Must admit my homeset, while very efficient and it just works, is a bag of wires, old boxes and bodging. Never buy a house from a builder hey.
Frodo
I know that feeling that is why I have gone completely wireless. I feel it has matured quite a lot now with XP SP2 and the security of WPA, WEP and MAC address filtering. Hey I have even got a wireless phone extender for my Sky box in the bedroom
Gaunty
512MB is not enough for XP and 1GB is too much, then its cheap enough now so don't skimp. I've got 1GB and I've never managed to use that much, even when encoding video.
