Sheds
Am just getting around to thinking about insurance for new GTi. Have just come out of a company scheme. Anyone have any ideas as to where to go for the best deal at the moment? Ideas gratefully received. cheers

silentandy
I've ordered my GTI, just wondering if anyone takes out GAP insurance with their new car and if it's best to go with the VW option or can you buy online?
Gareth
Before signing up for GAP insurance check with your insurer the cover they provide. For example with Tesco they have a full RTI (return to invoice) value if a new car is lost/stolen in the first 12 months. That is part of their std policy... bfc1912
Didn't do GAP as paying cash for car but did get total Loss Protection. Dealer initially told me £600 for 3 years GAP on £25,000 car. Phoned round and could get it cheaper so phoned him back and told him I wasn't happy. Gave me it for £300 without blinking an eye, this is definately the cheapest I could find. A bit of haggling and I could have probably got it for less, but didn't bather as this was already the cheapest price. Remember the the people aren't really bothered about the price there selling it to you for. They just get a set commision value for selling it to you. Don't be suckered, look around get the cheapest price knock some more money off it and tell the dealer to match it. 9 times out of 10 they'll do it. If your getting 0% APR on buying car you wont get this from your insurance company. Take the insurance companies one off payment quote (no interest incurred) and get dealer to split it over the terms of your 0% payment. Therefore you get to keep money in bank and get a bit of interest on it.
silentandy
I must have got my terminology wrong. I'm paying the stealer cash so I guess I would need Total Loss Protection and not GAP. This is actually my first time in buying a new car so not had to consider this before now!

[/ QUOTE ] As I understand it, depending on the level of cover you go for, in the event of a write off GAP insurance will cover you for:- 1. The difference between the insurance company's valuation and the original invoice price, or 2. The difference between their valuation and the cost of replacing with a new car. loddrik
Tesco are pretty good, esure are even better. Churchill proved far and away the cheapest for me though
sophiem
Tesco are good, i'm with them at the moment, but went online to check out a couple of different insurers before renewing and Elephant insurance are by far the best, managed to undercut tesco by over £200! geeonegee
First Alternative were v good for me.....cheapest and a good policy, told my mucker dazr32 to try them for a quote for him and his missus and they came in well cheaper than all the others he tried, needless to say he's with First Alternative now......if you garage your car then you can save even more money with them, easy to use online quote system as well.... martialyang
Started looking tonight. First Alternative came up tops for me at about 610 quid. Tesco quoted over 800. Norwich Union might be good (especially if you choose to have a high voluntary excess) but I couldn't seem to find the GTI listed on their site. egg.com quoted around 800. Yahoo
Be careful that quotes are for the 200bhp GTI. I found a great quote from one online insurer, but when it came to purchasing the the policy, they had quoted me for an '05 115bhp MkV GTI - which to my knowledge doesn't even exist. skifly
note many of the low figures returned for the GTI on confused show up as a 2005 115bhp golf... be careful & you may want to check if you have taken a policy based on this info...

frazervisser
Im with Admiral, £800 they quoted me, but i am just 24! It took them half a day to locate the correct car on the system though Ive fitted a tracker to the day and they gave me 6% off it wont pay for its self in insurance savings but it will make me sleep easier
skifly
might be worth remembering that most insurers consider the 18" alloys a modification - that includes first alternative who want to scam me out of just over another 100 squids for the puppies when i checked earlier. ucjtckc
I've just gone through the same with Elephant. My new GTI has Xenons and winter pack and Elephant (and for that matter Admiral and Bell Direct) treat them as modifcations. They insisted that my Xenons had to be declared as rally lights(!) and CD changer and heated seats as 'Interior changes'. These 'mods' cost me an extra £60 (10%) on my premium - if they weren't cheaper than the next best quote by about £70-80 I'd tell them where to go. I'll be insuring with someone else next year especially when they have a clause which says that they only replace with manufacturer standard parts, e.g. if I have a front end smash and my headlights need replacing then they'll just replace with standard halogens! Unbelieveable!! As you can guess, I'm driving very very carefully for the next year!
monsta_mo
eSure quoted me £487. Everyone else was £600+ with one joker quoting £837. I loose protected no claims but for all you loose should you make a claim, it's not worth paying the extra for anyway! I'm only 35 by the way! Simonl
monsta_mo, protected no claims is a scam, they'll still hike your premium for having a stack
