Questions on 6463

Sorry to keep bringing this subject up but I had a couple of questions and having trawled through as many posts as I can, I still need answers!

1. Does it matter which year the car is? My dealer (when I bought the car) told me that the tech checked my chassis # and that it wasn't needed. I figured I would drive the car for a bit and see if mine had a problem. It doesn't seem as bad as other people have described. It is an 03 plate.

2. Is there a simple way to check which version software I have? I know there is a way to access the info from climatronic but not sure there is definitive number to look for (221 220 etc) just in case its been done already.

3. Anyone in the south east had the upgrade? And where? Car was bought from Sidlow VW in Horsham but local dealer is Caffyns in Haywards Heath. Anyone used them?

4. Do I have to tell them I have had hesitation problems to get upgrade? My car doesn't really seem to suffer but would be interesting to see if upgrade makes car smoother. If they test drive it to try and feel problem for themselves they may say car is fine. Can I insist the work is done under warranty on the basis I read about it on here?

Thanks

Best thing you can do to the car and it costs nothing! Mine didnt suffer from hesitation but after 6463 it made it feel like a different car. Smoother, more responsive, quicker, easier to drive. I used VW in Letchworth (herts) but thats too far for you, any dealer should do it though. My car is sept '03, 53 plate with 10k miles. Also someone has shown that the bhp goes up to 258 from 237. I'm sure that alot of people on here who have 03 cars have had the upgrade done, someone will probably post up for you. Get on the phone to your local dealers on Monday and speak to the service manager, just tell him you need the upgrade done. Also tell him you want the master technician to do it not the new boy. I always get my car spotless before a garage touches it so that they are super careful with it. Hope this helps

Cant help you with dealers but refer them to the tech update from VW dated 7th Feb 05. Tell them that you have noticed a hesitancy and ask for the upgrade to be done.

I have a 53 reg which should have been fixed if there was a fix available, but the difference is incredible. The part throttle stutter at lows revs has gone and it seems sweeter across the entire range, much smoother. 169144-ok.gif

I had a bit of a battle but they did it in the end.

First thing to note is that this is a warranty issue and so you have to be firm that there is an issue otherwise the dealer is under no obligation update to 6463.

My 03 car has just had the 6463 update done today. I had my 04 car done a little while back. Having driven one with and one without side by side there is no doubt in my mind of the positive difference 6463 makes.

As to whether you can check which version you have using the climate I'm not sure on this and hope someone else can help.

Perhaps the techie is referring to the display screen they look at when they have the car plugged-in?

Once hooked up, the display shows them which version of the software is on the ECU, which dealer put it on and a few other details. They can print this out too.

A few weeks back, I recall, someone put on this site a picture of that display.

Just a guess...?

As far as I know there seem to be at least someone with a different MY / variant of the R32 who had #6463 done.

I was advised that theer are two different ECUs in the R32, one would take the update the other (Older) wouldn't, but was never advised it had anything to do with your chassis number.

Just get them to do it !!

Its a valid warranty item, issued by VW HQ, so they can't really say they're not going to do it as its been identified as a 'common' problem and thus a fix was developed..... so obviously your car will have the problem as well, and therefore you need to have th update.

Your climatronic has its own software and that is the 219/220/221 etc number you will see on it.

I have posted these pics before but here you go again hope this helps.

this is a copy of the previous version 2 software upgrade tech note, I don't have the latest one.

and here is a copy of the print out from my ECU once upgraded (this is a photo of it so please excuse the quality)

Made a big difference to mine too throughout the rev range.

As I posted elsewhere, I'm tagging along on a TT-Forum rolling road day soon. So I'll have some figures for post 6463 update hopefully.

When I first tried to get the upgrade done - about a week after I bought the car as I was so unhappy with the power delivery - the dealer I bought from tried to do the update but couldn't. I was told there was more than one version according to ECU type/code.

To answer your questions:

1. No it doesn't matter what year the car is. 6463 was totally post-production. No cars should have came with it as standard. Previous cersions of the software were kinda smattered across the range, but no new cars came with 6463.

2. The only simple way to really check is to hook your car up to someone with Vag-Com. Vag-com instantly reads the software type as Motronic 6463 (similar to dubzters post above).

3. Dunno

4. This kinda depends on the dealer. Mine were quite decent about it as I phoned and said I simply wanted the update. The guys was like....'oh...so you want that bit extra power then *grin*' I assume it was probably put through as hesitancy, but was still happily updated.

Hope this helps....

No, I went in to ask for the update, they said, not a problem!!! But described it as a DASH update, I've possibly noticed a change in 1st to 2nd gear, otherwise nothing else has changed. Have i had the right thing done???

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes VW describe it as a Dash Update.

Ok, so they haven't had the pleasure of carrying the work out on a 32 before, fair enough. BUT I cannot believe that they would have drawn a blank if they had made thorough enquiries with VW UK.

Feels like they need another prod Wayne, alternatively book yourself into another dealer to get the work done, doesn't take long & you could wait and familiarise yourself with the coffee & biscuits!
