Newbie123
With a 500GB limit....UK Online Not available in my area though. Anyone here looking at getting it??
Sparky
At only £10 more per month than the 2MB option, it seems daft not to! I would, but can't get it in my area.
Paul
i would not think there was any point. ive got 2mb and its only as quick as the server your pulling data off. its nice to have , but bit of an overkill.
Gaunty
I hope Newbie doesn't mind my hijacking his thread, it looks like he's pretty much done with it now anyway Is anyone with UK Online and what's the service like? I'm paying the same for my 512k with Wanadoo as their 2mbs service so it looks like I'd be daft not to move.
Daz
I think to get an 8Mb service you need to be in a major city centre. I live just outside London and can only get a max of 4Mb.
Sparky
8MB is wasted on one user however, as Paul says, it's overkill. The server is unlikely to offer you all that bandwidth - so 8MB only becomes useful if there are a lot of you sharing the connection or you're downloading from many servers. Belchy
I use a bit-torrent client that stacks up jobs and dowloads x amount of jobs at once and queues the rest. Due to performance issues with CPU/disk access etc ... they recommend only having a max of 5 jobs running at a time. Generally, with the 5 jobs running I only just use my 1MB connection because of (as has already been mentioned) throttling/bandwidth at the other end, so for me 8mb would be a waste of time until everyone catches up and the technology allows a faster upload. (My 1mb (soon to be 2mb) still only allows 250k upload!) Obviously this mainly applies to P2P stuff. On a positive note though ... you could share an 8mb connection with 8 neighbours over wireless lan and it would be around £5 per month each for 1mb
Chav
guys, does anyone know if upload speed is fixed by BT or variable by provider? be nice if i could get over 1Mbs upload speed on an ADSL connection? my connection is 99% for sending/receiving client files....and 1% car forums with IT sections :-)
Daz
You can get increased upload speed, it's called SDSL, or 'Synchronous Digital Subscriber Line', and the cost goes up tremendously.
Chav
always the same old chestnut .... expense :-( whats the fastest, reasonably price ADSL upload speed available then? eg less than £60/70 a month?
Daz
I think all ADSL uploads are fixed to 256Kbps regardless of download speed. If you want faster uploads you need either SDSL or leased line. SDSL usually costs in excess of £150 per month.
Chav
Dam, wish i could get cable here then. Ok, thanks for that.
craigyb
I have it and it's great, you actually get 512Kb up as well as the 8Mb down. I can actually use my VPN for work whilst downloading stuff and there's no degredation of service. I was paying £32 for 1mb BT, so for £39.99 it's a no brainer.
