Simon690
I'm thinking of getting an AWD estate car, I don't want/need a full on 4x4 just something that can get me across a few fields and down the occasional muddy track. I am looking at the Audi Allroad, Volvo XC70 and the Subaru Outback. Are there any others that I should consider? Any opinions on the Allroad, XC70 and Outback would be welcome. cruiser647
Had a drive of the original Forrester Turbo S, when I worked for Renault. What a hoot! Fantastic. went to a muddy, potholed, rough car park and scooted round it. GENIUS! Then took a Range Rover 4.0 HSE out - yawn/slow/boring - no fun at all - just a nice sound. This was the previous generation RR. The Volvo is too big and chuffing ugly. Outback and Forrester should be on the list, and the Allroad. Forrester might be that little bit better for field work..........
Simon690
The Forrester STi looks interesting but I'm not sure I want a grey import car. Great value though. The Audi is top of the list right now, time to go shopping...
Daz
The allroad is a great car, I had one for just over a year. You need to decide which engine you need, either 2.5Tdi V6, 2.7t V6 or 4.2 V8. I think you'll find that the most popular (and the best residuals) is the 2.5Tdi with Tiptronic gearbox. If you want performance then choose the 2.7t or 4.2. For towing go for the 2.5Tdi or 4.
Simon690
Thanks Daz, useful info. What's the fuel consumption like? I know what the Audi numbers are but wonder what the real-world consumption is like. I've read that the diesel can be quite thirsty.
Daz
The diesel is the most economical of the 3 and mine used to return between 26 & 30 depending on style and type of driving. Was much better on a run than it was around town.
R32North
Its a 2.5Tdi that I'd be after, as towing would be a part of its weekly duties.
eolair
Is it the allroad that has twin-turbos that need replacing at 60k miles or so? At fearful prices?
Daz
The allroad 2.7T has twin turbos, it's the same engine as in the A6 2.7T & S4. I've not heard of them needing replacing at 60k though.
