Malcolm
I have a Passat TDI auto 1998, when I brake, the brake lights come on and so do the front side lights (honest). Can anyone throw any light on my problem please. Thanks Malcolm

felixthecat1
Drive with the side lights on all the time, just pretend you're driving a Volvo. Sorry, I shouldn't have. Best of luck sorting it out.
cruiser647
I think the the brake bulbs inerds are touching. It allows current to flow through the light circuit. One of my Omega's had that. Well puzzled, as the dashboard panel always showed the same error when I braked - effectively saying duff front light. Change the rear brake light bulbs and see if that helps. Have a look too, to see if the circuits are touching each other. Good luck!
Skidmark
It's a bad earth on the rear lights. the current is going to earth thro' the side/tail lights ?? cheers
Malcolm
I think you are probably right. When I take a rear bulb out it cures the problem. I will replace them. Thanks for your help. Malcolm
Skidmark
it's not just the bulbs....it is the earth to the light unit cheers
cruiser647
[ QUOTE ] it's not just the bulbs....it is the earth to the light unit [/ QUOTE ] Not necessarily. Faulty manufacture might have the brake element touching the general light element - hence current goes across when he brakes........ And the bulbs are the cheap option to start with
asta
yes, most of the time you just need to replace the bulbs.
Dibley
Hi, I had the exact same problem last month… and it was me/Halfords being dullards! I had gone to Halfords to pick up a new break light bulb and the flappy reference book thingy was not very clear so I asked the bloke behind the counter.. and I quote.. "this'll be the one you need sir" the spotty young man said. And yes... you guessed it... it turned out to be the wrong bulb, which made my side lights come on when I braked and my high intensity break light to stay on, however, I did not notice it straight away. So I popped into my main dealer a few weeks later when someone pointed it out to me and explained the problem, whilst they had a look I took the opportunity to have a good look around the new GTI and chatted to the very pretty service desk lady (indeed they both looked beautiful, but I decided that upkeep/maintenance would be pricey!!). After 10 minutes of fiddling and poking around the man made me feel about 2 feet tall by telling me that I had the wrong bulb inserted!! 50p and a red face later all was well – apart from my pride! Hope this helps. Dibley 2000(W) 1.8T Revo Remap – goes like fook!
