ozzy11
Hi,new here lookin for some help and info with the 5000 s. Recently purchased 1988 5000 s. Awesome shape for the year, howecer there is a humming coming from the rear seat, trunk area, and the vehicle now keeps dying out intermittantly.(pull over put it in neutral idle erradic for a second or two then go like normal) does this sound like a fuel pump or filter to anyone?I`ve never owned one of these vehicles before so any help is much appreciated
s4dreamer
I'm no expert on these cars, but from your description of the symptoms, and the location of the humming noise, it sounds very much like the fuel pump may be at fault (you shouldn't really be able to hear it once the engine is running). AlexLoach
I had a fuel pump go on my old Mk3 Golf GTi, sounding like a high pitched whine..could hear it best from outside the car as the pump was above the rear wheels. When it was on the way out when you nailed it the power just never came and you slowed right down as the engine was starved on fuel
