Phantom
Just had two new tyres fitted and got the tyre monkeys to balance all the wheels. Watched them do it so I know they are all perfectly balanced. Well, so long as their machine has been calibrated properly. The issue I have is that I still have a slight vibration coming from the front wheels. I am quickly coming to the conclusions it is to do with the small black gurney type plastic strips on the bottom of the front spoiler. I took mine off last August as like most other cabs they are prone to damage and tend to hang off. What I have noticed is that at motorway speed driving into the wind there is some noticeable vibration, but later in the day driving in the opposite direction it is perfectly smooth. Therefore the only conclusion that I can come to is that the gurney flaps actually help the underside aerodynamics by diverting air away from the wheels. Does the make sense or am I smoking something !, any thoughts ?
CarMad
I used to get a vibration that I think came from the Quattro at some cruising speeds. Wasn't tyres as I have them checked. Asking a few others they said it was common. Not sure it it is that or even if you car is quattro. Have you had the rears balanced ? as they could be causing the issue. As for the aero dynamics being the problem. Its possible I spose.
Phantom
My car is non-Quattro, and I even got them to swap the front wheels on to the back and had the new tyres put onto the front of the car. So I know it can't be the wheels. Getting the car serviced in a month so may enquire to see if I can get a new pair of gurney flaps put back on. Sparky
I can't see how it would be the spoiler, but who knows. I've got the GMBH kit on and the front spoiler is different to the standard A4, but no vibrations at all when braking. Sure the disks aren't slightly warped? I was told by a garage that going through icey cold puddles with hot brakes has resulted in a fair few disc swaps this month. Just a thought. UBM
I don't think the front valence is going to adjust the airflow significantly to cause the problem you describe. More likely to be something to do with the wheels..
Chav
I havent noticed any difference since i removed my flaps mark. Have you ever kerbed an alloy? I'm thinking if its not the wheels then maybe the suspension has had a knock at some point? That could give vibrations. (ps. gurney flaps is that the correct term. cool...i never knew that!!)
