steve2
Foreign speed drivers 'not fined' Cameras caught more than 1,000 foreign drivers speeding More than 1,000 foreign drivers caught speeding in Kent escaped without penalty, police figures have revealed. The force said none of the 1,148 drivers from abroad who broke the speed limit on camera in 2004 were fined. UK drivers are traced through the DVLA database and fined within the 14-day notice period, but there is no easy way to trace foreign drivers, police said. Kent Police said it was working with other forces and the government to address the problem. But a spokesman said foreign drivers caught speeding would still be pulled over and arrested where necessary. 'On-the-spot fines needed' The RAC has called for on-the-spot fines to be issued, which is the method used in France. Spokesman Kevin Delaney said: "The RAC foundation would have no problem with introducing on-the-spot fines. "Certainly they are widely used on the other side of the Channel by the French police. "The problem, of course, is that speed cameras, whatever their benefits, cannot actually levy fines. "So you would need some form of physical police presence on the road." that over 60k the treasury have lost out on then
v15ben
Well I am sure the French treasury wouldn't make the same mistake with all those speeding down to Le Mans in June!! Surely they do well out of all those fines!
Drew666
Was driving in the UK a couple of years ago in my German registered BMW. Set off a Gatso & thought "Bugger! I can live without this." until it dawned on me that they would never go to the bother of trying to trace me here in Germany. I then made a point of deliberately setting off every camera I could find. Managed about 7 in the course of 4 days. Never heard a thing from them. Brilliant. carfiend
Annoys me because all the police ever say if you complain about a car with a non uk plate is that they can;t trace it. Oh so we can be traced here but not the other way around, well this EU thing is fair ins't it.
StephV6
How may times do you hear Brits taking their car to way over the maximum speed limit on the nice French Motorways??? Quite a few times, me thinks I think it's good that it now works both ways

Moff S3
But the RAC are turning into a bunch of anti-speeding devious w4nkers. They used to stand behind the driver and protect are interests. Now they are jumping on the speed kills everyone band wagon. At least the AA are still with us. JamesB
Ah the joys of having a car registered abroad. I used to leave my French registered car all over the place (not dangerously, of course ) and relish the look on pedestrians' faces as I just threw the parking tickets in the bin. Mollox
I'm afraid I cannot condone this type of reprehensible, irresponsible behaviour! Oh and the insurance is SO much cheaper too Apparently
