waynog
Well didn't take long, but I got my botty spanked last night ( not litterally !) Day 1 of new car, driving home after being out for dinner last night, about 11.30pm, nothing much else on the road, I'm poodling along at 30mph on a 50mph b road. Quite happilly playing with the sat nav ( you know, zooming in and out of local area etc, etc) when all of a sudden, I can see some huge estate car driving very close behind me, with his fog lights on. Being the courteous road user that I am, I accelerated to ( at least) 50mph, when all of a sudden, this huge estate car, pulls UP behind me again indicates and pulls ROUND and IN FRONT of me. I'm thinking " what the fck ? so much for my S4" when I saw the model inscription as he left me for dust. I think you all know what I saw.... RS6 I kind of guess he only did that to say " hey, you might have a new S4, but it's only a boys toy compared to my RS6 " Wonder if he would have overtaken any other car or was he just making a point?!! Dave
LOL.. to be honest, i used to do that a lot in my RS6. It was certainly nice to do it to boyed up cars, not so much S4's and stuff, but certainly the RS Focus and stuff.. very satisfying But a bit tooooooo easy to be honest
Chav
Wayne, how hard were you trying out of interest? Real world difference isn't huge.

[/ QUOTE ] I would agree with that.. certainly the new 4.2 S4.. Unless he was comming at you at a great speed and already had the momentum.. Mind you.. that RS6 was stunningly quick with it auto box in sports.. difficult one!
waynog
I wasn't trying that hard to be honest- day 1, I was bearing in mind the " try to keep revs to 75% of maximum for 1st 1,000km " ( or whatever it probably says in handbook) Wayno
UBM
Be careful though - you don't want any points with a brand spanking new car!
SPLiiX
You will need to find a 3.0 to do the same too!
Scotty
Wayne, Don't worry about it. No shame in being passed by an RS6. Your car needs running in properly. Once it gets to around 10k then I felt mine loosen. Maybe it was the driving up and down the Alps that I was doing at the time but it did feel like it would spin up faster from this point. UBM
I remember getting overtaken by an RS6 a year or so ago - there was a flash and a whoosh and it was gone!
Scotty
Real world...how about Castle Combe last weekend? A heavily tuned RS6 didn't pass me all day.
Sparky
I suspect that might be down to driver skill then?
Scotty
or confidence or the 4 is more chuckable than the 6 etc etc Either way I'm just trying to show that it's not a case of being spanked.

JamesB
I wasn't sure that I should as everyone was having so much fun speculating but since you ask so nicely In a straight line I find the RS6 considerably quicker for day to day driving, mainly because it hits peak torque earlier and hangs on to it for considerably longer. If you drive the S4 aggressively and keep it in the right sort of rev range, then it acquits itself pretty well - it would still have to accept second best but not by as big a margin as you might expect. When it gets a bit more twisty, then I found that the S4 felt more secure. It certainly should be more chuckable due to weight and weight distribution. But the RS6 keeps on surprising me when I push it harder. It feels like it should lose it a bit but doesn't so I probably end up not always driving it to the limit of its abilities on the bendy bits. Overall I'm not surprised by what Scotty said about his track experience but I'm also not surprised about the RS6 burning past the S4 on an every day kind of drive. Does that make any sense at all? Edited to add: One of the problems of judging the difference is that the RS6 makes its straight line performance seem so effortless (not that the S4 struggled). You don't always feel that you've done that much until you suddenly realise that the rest of the traffic is barely visible in the rear view mirror. And shouldn't this thread be appropriately graemlined

DHA
Yes. Having driven an RS6 on a test drive I can see where you are coming from. However my first S4 drive will be about 3 weeks away when mine hopefully arrives
JamesB
You're buying without a test drive? Obviously a brave man. That's exactly what I did (mainly because I ordered before demos were available) and I don't regret it at all, I thought my S4 was great.

And if you are, the difference isnt going to be huge, so you should be able to make it a bit more awkward for an unmodded RS6. I found the S4 disappointing for low end grunt, it didnt feel much different to the 3.0, but it certainly comes alive further up the revs. Guess i'm saying thrashing the balls off the S4 would help

DHA
Yeah buying without testdrive, only reason really is demo was sold day before i went to test. However have bought 2 cars in the past without a test and enjoyed them so I am willing to risk it

Of course, when you have a 4.2 litre block, you start with something of an advantage.
