How does turbo cooling work?

as i understand it there is a water cooling jacket around the turbo. During normal use, its kept flowing by normal waterpump..

the electric water pump cirulates the coolant after engine shuts down for a pre set time. this helps take the heat away from the turbo, and stops the oil, which is now NOT cirulating, from burning up in the turbo, bearings etc, under the extreme heat the turbo creates.

personally, i still let engine tick over abit before shutting down, just to keep oil circulating that little bit longer.

im sure someone will correct me if there are any errors. smirk.gif

The oil flow is determined by a restrictor in the oil inlet port of the turbo. Boost does not affect it.

The oil lubricates the shaft bearings. Yes, there are shaft seals. The coolant flows through an outer jacket. Some cars have the after-run pump, most so not. The 2.7T, K04 1.8T, NB and Ibiza are the modern cars that I know have it. With synthetic oil it is not critical.

A car running more boost can use more oil through the breather system.
