Waylander
into month 11 of insurance. I usually say [and usually do] less that 12k mileage a year...and am at 11.9 now. on call this weekend and just got back from work now [40 miles away] and thought i better call only to find: #1 my schedule says annual mileage 11.5k #2 the office closed today at 2pm and i am likely to be called in again sometime today. okay so it is all a games of [hopefully] low probability but on high-traffic-cos-of-footie weekend if the worst was to happen would i be screwed? What can i do?
R32Ash
As far as I know, you wouldn't be 'screwed'. It's supposed to be an estimate anyway, so you weren't that far off. Also, if the worst happened and you had a claim, I think you just end up with a bigger excess of sorts. I'm fairly sure that was in the small print of a limited mileage policy I used to have. a4tdi130
When you took out your insurance policy, did you tell them what mileage your car was on? I've never had to, so although I tell them I do 12,000 miles a year, they aren't to know that I didn't do 10,000 or 20,000 miles before insuring it with them (unless it's brand new and they are the first insurers). Insurance Jon
are you definately limtied on the milage or have you got a discount based on an estimate...there is a difference. The way to check is to read the endorsements ont he schedule.
Waylander
okay i will attach copies of both the proposal [where it says "estimated mileage"] and also the schedule ]where it says "Annual mileage"]. There is also an "Important Information" letter with a Duty of Disclosure section in which it says: You must tell us as soon as possible if: - you change your annual mileage. "we may then reasses your cover and preium. If you do not tell us about any relevant changes, we may: -reject or reduce a claim; or -treat you as not being insured" The car was new so mileage on the odometer is mileage done. Scooby i would do as you suggest but there isnt any option to leave a message on the number they (First Alternative) give, just an "office opening hours are"...notice. Milo
[ QUOTE ] I can't see it - can you zoom in a bit? [/ QUOTE ] I am with esure which is also First Alternative (your insurers?). I ticked the 8000-9000 box on my mileage but the policy confirmation states "8500 estimated". You will have ticked 11000-12000 I would think so you can go up to 12000 before you fall foul anyway. If you're only going to do say 12500 I wouldn't bother telling them. If it's more likely to be 13000+ then it may be worth a 'phone call just to make sure you still covered. beez
While we're on the subject: I'm with Norwich Union and said my estimated annual mileage is 6000 miles. It's probably going to be shedloads more than that. Should I bother worrying - after all, it's only estimated and they don't know the mileage before it was insured. Waylander
when a previous car of mine got written off they asked for the MOT certificate. your old mileage would be on there so you'd be chancing it - hence why i got so jittery this time my friend
Insurance Jon
Thats the whole point, they need to put an endorsement on the policy saying what happens if you exceed this. most insurers don't limit you anymore...an estimate is only that, and estimate! If you were restricted it would have an endorsement on the policy to the effect of "if xmiles exceeded policy excess increases to £xxx" If it doesn't it's not a problem. email the full schedule to me on [email protected] and I'll read it for you! beez
I love that I have some pop up program on my laptop that I can't find, and whenever I click on this topic, a car insurance pop up...pops up. It's not so annoying, cos it actually amuses me (and it doesn't pop up, so much as put a tab down at the bottom there \/ )

Rich
My annual mileage used to be 12k, then I started doing more and do in the region of 14-15 now. I called my insurer to say about it and they changed the annual mileage estimate to 15k. Added about £15 to my policy. The person I spoke to on the phone said they normally allow 1k over without any fuss, but like other posts, how they know your exact mileage at the start of the year?
