Hi all, after browsing TSN for a while I finally decided to sign up. I'm hoping some of you VW guru's can help me out, I recently bought a Y reg Golf GTi Turbo, last week I had to have the throttle bodies cleaned out as the car kept stalling, after that the car ran fine, however this morning an orange light came on that looks like an engine, is this the ECU light? and what does it mean, could it be related to my earlier problem with the throttle bodies, I have booked it in with the local VW dealer to get it looked at on Saturday, until then I dont want to drive it incase I cause any damage. bike.thumb.gif If anyone can throw any light on what could be wrong it'd be appreciated.

Skidmark, no the car isnt modified, bit of a typo there, the symbol looks like an engine.

CRJ 1, thats interesting that you mention the ESP light came on when your ECU died, as mentioned to Skidmark the light looks like an engine, which in the owners manual is releated to exhaust emissions, however the local VW dealer has told me that the Engine symbol relates to my ECU, and that the ECP light is for my exhaust emissions, so in effect the bloke at the dealers is saying that the manual has the two symbols the wrong way round.

Wife's Polo Sport had the engie light come on a few times - lots of town driving, ferry the children about. It was runnig low on gas so I filled it up & took it for a blast down a dual carriageway for 30 minutes & never seen the problem again - now I just make sure it get a regular long run.

Here's an update on the problem, took my Golf to the local dealer on Saturday, they put it on the diagnostic's which reported a fault with the thermostat, so they interrogated the thermostat, which they expected to point to one of the temperature sensors in the engine, but it pointed to the water pump, which really confused the mechanics as they said that the water pump is mechanical and not electrical, so the diagnostics should not see a fault with it. So they reset the system (?) and the light went out, however by Sunday night the Engine light was on again. The dealer advised that if it comes back on they will have to run the dignostics again and maybe replace the thermostat, if the problem still persists they will consider replacing the water pump, which also means replacing the cam belt, which sounds pricey to me !! So at the moment I still have a problem and dont know the cause.
