JimTd
Hi, I am new to this forum. I have been a Mercedes owner/driver for the last 6 years and have now decided to change to an Audi A6 Avant. I would like some advice on what to look for and to avoid when looking at buying a secondhand A6. I am used to diesels, having a C250TD auto for the last 3 years. I have test driven a 1.9Tdi 130bhp 6-speed and was very impressed, I did have my mind set on a 2.5TDi Quattro, these seem to be quite rare especially with leather. I was after a diesel because thats what I have always prefferred but the thought of a 2.7 biturbo with 250bhp is quite tempting!! Are the A6's in general reliable? Are the Quattro's that much better? (I am used to RWD not FWD) Is it worth paying the premium for a diesel, I only do about 10K a year. Anything I should be looking for? I appreciate your help and advice. grahamb
Quattro will destroy any hopes you have of decent MPG. Tales of 25-30mpg from the petrol and the 2.5 TDI are common.
cruiser647
Go get it! You will see a huge performance difference going from C250TD to the V6 2.5 TDi. (they come in different power outputs,so be weary - 150BHP is the min) The torque levels should bemuch higher, AND a much nicer sound. I think you will be disappointed with the 1.9TDi, as it does not sound as nice and nowhere like your 5 cyinder. Quattro's are good, cornering becomes enjoyable! 10K a year, not sure on the savings. The Biturbo's drink for England - you would be better off with the 4.2V8 under the bonnet.
Edd_W
and will always try to stick with them. I like the balance and ability to use silly acceleration in the wet in corners. My 2.7t avant averages about 25mpg over a week but is better than my wifes 2.8q on any sort of long run.
johnny11
Well to be honest on long runs i can get over 30mpg out of my A6 2.7t .
andyo
I've got the 150bhp front wheel drive 2.5 with the quattro wheels on and that is fine for handling (not that the Q wheels make any difference). I get a bit of wheelspin if I'm going a bit quick around a wet roundabout but its not necessary for this power in a car this size. If I'm in a hurry I'll take the 3.2 or the bike. Fontain in slough have a nice silver A6 about £20k. I wish I got one with an auto box and leather. We only do about 10k a yr but with a better re-sale value and savings on fuel I think it works out cheaper. Also when we do go on a trip we don't have to look around for diesel with 550mls to the tank.

The average on my 2.7T was a shade under 24mpg. I get nearly that much from my RS6!

[/ QUOTE ] To prove it, after last weekend's trip up to the Norfolk cottage and back (380 miles), the DIS is showing average speed 80.3 and average consumption 24.1! danksy
Jim, I have the A4 Avant Quattro, and under every day (hard!) use I get 38mpg. If I keep to a constant speed below 70 i get more like 45 on a good run!
JimTd
Well, I have decided to keep the Merc a bit longer. I have driven several A6's and whilst very nice I think I will miss some features of the Merc. Trouble is my car is top spec, to get a similar spec A6 is quite hard, very few autos around and cruise control seems very rare. I also want leather seats too so I am asking for rather alot that is almost standard on the Mercs. I was also not too impressed with the handling of the A6, nice on main roads and motorways but a bit 'vague' cross country!! I know it is a bigger car than the C-class so to be expected. I shall look again in 6 months or so and try and find a high spec quattro.
cruiser647
Fair enough, You tried, so you have now got a taster. Hopefully, in 6 months, there will be the leathered Quattro Auto cruise that you desire! I miss the cruise in my A6 Q (was in my A8 and Omega TD as std) will see if it can retrofit........ Funnily enough, I am thinking of getting rid of my Cab for something far cheaper for a few months and funnily enough I have started looking at another C-Class estate, yours is so nice that you would have to find something really special to beat it.
