Digital video camera bargain?

Ben toying with the idea of getting a digital camcorder for a while, but a mate of mine has just ordered one of these, and it seems an absolute bargain!

What do we think?

DXG DVC301 - 3 in 1 Digital Video Camera with MPEG4 Video

Is this a good substitute for a proper camcorder?

Seems amazingly cheap and very convenient, no tapes just memory cards.

I'm guessing there must be quality compromises or something.

Is it just a toy, or is it worth getting?

grin.gif A mate brought one of these back from Hong Kong for me - Panasonic SV-AV50 - it too does MPEG4 video recording, direct to SD memory. Overall I'd say its a bit of a toy as the video quality is OK for little clips (messing about filming mates snowboarding antics) but its results look poor when made 'full screen' on a laptop and certainly not a replacement for a proper video camera.

grin.gif If you want to replace a video camera I'd go for one of these SV-AV100 which records in MPEG2 - great quality but then a 512mb memory card won't do much more than 10 mins recording and you end up paying twice as much as a good miniDV camcorder costs !

Good advice, cheers Bazza. beerchug.gif

So basically, don't buy one as a camcorder substitute, but as a cheap and easy way of grabbing low quality but viewable movie clips they're ok.

Wonder how much a 1/2 gig card would be..?
