Wibbl
Has anyone else noticed that the leather seats seem to go very "baggy" after only a short time? Looking at various photos of test cars the flat of the seat shows the black leather looking less than perfect. I was thinking about getting the leather but am a bit concerned about the seats looking naff after only slight use. Anyone else spotted this? sidicks
After about 10k miles in my S3, I noticed the leather become a bit creased, so I started putting leather care on it regularly and after 3 1/2 years and 30k miles, it's still looking pretty good. I expect the R32 leather is similar to the S3 leather, so I wouldn't worry about the leather going baggy - particularly if you treat it regularly once you get the car. Hope this is at least a little bit of help !! sidicks
Wibbl
That's what I would expect. The black leather setas in my 2 1/2 year old TT still look great with the usual leather feed/clean treatment. Looking at magazine road test photos the seats seem to me to look a bit saggy and can't have had much use. Would someone with a car and the black leather seats like to comment/post a photo please? It's a very expensive option and I would ideally like to know it's going to wear as well as the TT has. Thanks Wibbl.
L3ETT
I've noticed on my cloth seats that the bottom part of the seat seems 'softer' than the back and I can see an ar$e indentation beginning to form already! I'm wondering if it is just the design of the seats - but I think the leather may well look like the picture we've all seen after a year or so
Woppum
I am hoping that the leather seats will take a bit of wear. On the bright side, everything is a comprimise, if you want such an amazing car, you have to expect there to be little faults. To me it is still well worth it. On the other hand i may be building the situation up a bit. I havent even driven the car yet considering it is still on order, but i have no doubt in my mind it will not be up to my expectations... Wibbl
Wonder if it's the Konig seats, I think the ones I'm used to in the TT, Porsche etc are Recaro and maybe they don't have the built in ar$e imprinter function..... If the fabric do it as well then I may have to change the order back to leather from fabric. (There goes another £2k) Wibbl. Still thinking I may cancel my order.... But then again maybe not... Woppum
If you decide to cancel the order, will you choose another car to take its place or will you stick with the current one? (TT) i think.
Wibbl
The TT is my wife's car so it's not going anytime soon. Also up for consideration at the moment are: VX220 Turbo Renaultsport Clio V6 Second Hand 993 Mitsubishi Evo VIII Second Hand M5 And I'm having a job making my mind up so any thoughts would be most welcome. Woppum
Golf R32 It is very rare and looks good. It has understated looks. A big N/A engine. HAs a very nice interior. Good for everyday use. Makes a great noise. Good handler with 4 wheel drive. On the other hand it could be considerd a bit pricy (unless you compare it with an S3). May have a harsh ride (dosent bother me). This is my choise.. VX220 Turbo This looks like it will be a very cool car. Very fast and better looking than the elise. On the other hand the interior is bare and there are virtually no options so it may be irritating as an everday car. Renaultsport Clio V6 It looks incredible and probably has a nice engine to go with it. On the poor side I dont like the steering wheel or the interior (leather is 4000pound option). Apparently the engine sounds very nice, but car is not a good handler in the wet but then again i suppose it depends if you want to push it. Second Hand 993 Ask blue he seems to think it is the bollo#ks. Mitsubishi Evo VIII The inside is not that nice but i bet it is the most incredible ride. My mate has the 7 and it really is very very fast, but you do sacrifice looks and practicality for ever day use. Second Hand M5 They are rated to be the most fun drive out of the competition (E55, RS6, Jag), They look good on the inside and out. On the bad side they are soon to be replaced by a 500bhp sucessor (but may not look as good). Also will be a second hand car so if the warrenty has run out, it could be the most expencive option in the long term. P.S. MAy be stating the obvious but apart form the performance this is what i would look at.
Wibbl
My concerns about the R32 are: 1) Fast but not FAST 2) MK V Golf here real soon now so this is going to hurt the residual values big time and I won't be driving about in the current model shape Golf for long before it's obsolete. MK V suspension set up may well redefine the Golf driving experience. 3) Seats that look "baggy" after a couple of weeks and have a permanent imprint of my (somewhat larger than ideal sized) ar$e. 4) Less than wonderful stereo 5) Have to wait until September for it to be delivered 6) Annoying boom about 2,000 rpm 7) Gear change not that great, especially 4th to 5th On the brighter side 1) Sounds great 2) Looks great 3) Great build quality 4) Not bad value for money (especially if I can resist the leather) 5) For normal road use probably fast enough 6) Great seats and interior 7) Love that blue 8) 4wd I could come up with a simmilar pro and con list for the others on my list and the R32 would come out ahead by a tiny margin which is why I went and ordered one. I Guess I'm just not 100% convineced else I wouldn't be writing this. Blast! Wibbl.
Woppum
Wibble, convince yourself. save the 2k on the seats if you are not convinced but do not worry about the speed. AMD are offering a conversion for 1k to boost the power 30bhp to 275bhp. On top of that there are many new conversions which will appear on the market including superchargers and bi-turbos which will considerably increase the power (the most powerful 512bhp, but this will not be cheap.) It is a great understated car and i want to convince you. On the negative side i have to say that i have never driven the car but from what the reviews say it is presently at the top of the class. Mine is on order and i cant wait and there is no chance in my mind i will be disapointed. Just remember this, if you keep waiting then there are always going to be new and better alternatives out on the market, but then you will always be waiting. If i were you i would go with the flow and get the best car in this league with no comprimises (except the baggy leather, which may be better than you think anyway). TiSwAs
Hi, First post here.... I've got an RS Focus on order but now that i have seen the R32 i could be persuaded otherwise.... Went to my local VW dealer who have a Demo, sat in it started her up.... lurvley engine/exhaust notes.... have booked in for a test drive next week.... they can get hold of one for September time when they get there next allocation. My major concern is what you pointed out Wibbl.... the new Golf is here next June and that could hit residual value some what and for one i wouldn't like running around in "an older shaped car" although performance and double take wise i'm sure it'll prove to still have the looks when it does finally arrive... Also the leather is an expensive option at £1900, and from what people have said about sagging and looking after it etc it may prove more trouble thatn it's worth esp. if Half leather comes as standard.... can someone confirm that it does come with half leather as standard please? Regards Dave
Woppum
I read an article on someone that had recently taken delivery of the focus rs. She said that her friend had just got the R32 and she felt it was far better than the focus. She then sold the focus and orderd the R32. I thinkt he probelm with the focus is that: a. it has a very boring interiour with low comfort levels. b. the turbo is supposed to be unopredictable which can get tiresome c. the torque steer can ruin the driving experiance on the road and would be far better left for the track d. the front wheel drive with all of that power cant be good, espeshally in the wet. the golf has a better engine note, a more desirable immage, better looks (i personally feel), great seats (apart for the baggyness). Anyway if i was going to go for power and drivers experiance over the overall compramise, insted of paying 20k on the focus i would pay 20k for a new evo 7. In my head there is no reason why to go for teh focus over the evo, except it does look better.

Wibbl
Can anyone please post a picture of the leather seats which have actually been used and not the shots from the marketing material? The other problem is the new A3, available with the 3.2 V6 before the end of 2003 I understand. Wibbl.
Woppum
I dont think the 3.2 will be nearly as fun or sport to drive. I twill probably be more luxuary orientated and more expencive. I suppose whatever floats your boat.
