Yet another 'give me some new car advice' thread!

I know you lot must be sick to the eye teeth of this sort of thing by now, but don't let that stop you joining in!!

I've had my trusty Leon Cupra for 18 months now and while she has served me (almost) without fault in all that time, I am now starting to hanker after something else.

I spent most of last weekend searching out M3's and began doing a bit of research. However, over the past couple of days I have been finding it very hard to justify (to myself) spending £25K or more on a car that, quite frankly, I don't get to drive that much.

So I started thinking of a list of practical cars (i.e. not 2 seaters), that I can get the family in for a top budget of between £18 - £20K.

Bearing in mind that I don't really want an older car than the one I already have (2002 52 plate), my list so far has pretty much started and stopped at an R32.

Then I tried to decide whether I wanted a 3 or 5 door one. Then I tried to decide if I wanted Indigo or Moonlight Blue.

It's driving me crazy - 2 weeks ago, I told the wife I would be keeping the LC until March next year. Now I'm almost at the point of sorting out testdrives.

What do you guys reckon for that sort of money - R32 or something else?

Over to you 169144-ok.gif

My knowledge of R32s is what I have read on TSN and they sound like a phenomenal car.

If the new wheels are going to be used as a family car then it has to be 5 door IMO 169144-ok.gif

But £20k opens up all sorts of possibles.

Are you looking for small, medium, large? Cupra sized? Fast? I presume used?

More, more. SPericani2.gif

Certainly no smaller or slower than the Cupra. I find that a nice sized car which is why I was considering the R.

I've only ever bought one brand-new car and I swore I'd never do it again. I'd rather let someone else take the inital hit on depreciation. Therefore it has to be used.

The new A3 is nice, but I'm not really sure it floats my boat.

I also like the A4 cab in 1.8T guise and the A4 Avant in the same (with the S-Line pack), but I'm pretty sure both those are outside budget too.

If money was no object, then I'd get the M3 without a second thought, but there is something telling me that I "can't" go over the £20K threshold.

Suggest away.

When is the new Cupra out, is that not an option?

Or how about a MKV GTI? I would say that of course. 169144-ok.gif

The new Cupra won't be out for a while and I'm not sure about the looks. Maybe I'll change my mind when I see one.

New Golf GTi is likely to be as above post i.e. too expensive. Shame, as they look nice in white (fully expecting to be flamed on that!)

I doubt you would pick up a decent A4 cab for £20k of the age you're after. However that kind of money will probably get you a 54 plate saloon or avant (last of the B6 range) which in s-line guise would get you a 1.8T 190 PS, the 18" RS6 wheels and GmbH body kit.

The performance would not be a patch on the R32 but then there's always chipping etc to 230+

Or wait until Oct 05, by then the R32 replacement will have been announce via the Frankfurt Show. If it's a special car it will knock Mk4 R prices a bit and for £17.5k you will pick up a Mk4 with 12-15k miles!

That's an option - although there is a nice one on autotrader at the moment, with AMD to 280bhp and Milltek.

Shame i'm not in a position to get one this weekend. frown.gif

I think both of these are in your budget range!

A 1.8T 53 cab should be bordering on the 20K mark now, and B6 1.8T s-line's are definitely available for under 20K 169144-ok.gif

The cab will feel slower of course.

Depends what elements are most important in terms of practicality or speed? 169144-ok.gif

I was having the A4 cab v 3 series cab discussion with BumpRT, Shark90 and John Carter when we went out last week. They were all shocked to hear me say that I would take a 330 diesel sport cab over an A4 cab blush.gif

Pincher, you will find any of the A4 1.8T's a lot slower than your Seat
