steve09
Thinking of taking my car to a track day, just wondering if anyone has been before with the 'R'? Also is the car strong enough to take a good days motoring?
FiftyPence
Get some Red Stuff brake pads, the OEM R brake pads suffer heavily from fading after a good day at the track so ive read

Mook
I take mine out quite regularly to track days - the engine and transmission will be absolutely fine. Once you've been out for the day, you'll probably want to upgrade the suspension with anti-roll bars and strut braces to dial out a lot of the understeer. Be careful with your brakes! It depends how long you're out for and which track you're on. The faster the track (like Donington) the quicker they'll start to fade. The R32 brakes are great for normal road driving, but anything more that 5 laps around a track and you'll notice them start to go - depending on your driving of course... Whatever you do, make sure you do a cool down lap after your last quick lap and when you come in, never put your handbrake on! Leave it in first gear on a flat surface. I ended up warping my front disks at Donington, so upgraded the brakes front and rear to www.ecstuning.com Stage 5 front and Stage 1 rear. EBC don't do Green Stuff or Red Stuff pads yet for the Cayenne Turbo calipers (which come with the ECS Stage 5 front kit) so I have to make do with OEM Porsche pads at £150 a set until EBC have released them. Have fun
Golfgirl
I've done 3 track days in mine (Donington x 1 and Cadwell x 2) and have just spent a long weekend at the Nurburgring. It's a great car on track - handles superbly. Just watch the brake pads though like MG said - they tend to get a bit "juddery" when hot.

Golfgirl
Fantastic!! I went with a load of people off Club GTI and when they found out we were taking the R32 instead of my b/f's Mk 2 track car they laughed, but throughout the weekend they actually realised what a good car it is on track! Most of them had passenger laps and were impressed. My b/f has more experience of track days than me and said that all it needs is some decent ARB's, slicks or road-legal track tyres and it will be sorted. With your set up I would imagine it would be pretty good! I needed new brake pads when we came back - they were about half worn before going and we did around 30-35 laps between us and they were pretty shagged by the time we got home. It's quite a heavy car for track use but seemed to pull up the hills pretty well. I was worried my b/f would have a strop on because he didn't have his Mk 2, but he actually enjoyed driving the R32! Golfgirl
I didn't, no. I had trouble getting my head round the track and don't know it well enough to push myself at the moment. My b/f however did a 9:15 in the R32
jonnywilk
I too went to the Nurburgring last weekend in my R32. My front-right brake disc became warped half way round the 1st lap and there weren't any VW dealers nearby that had any in stock. Had to ignore the juddering for the remaining laps, but other than that the R handled really well, well until i cracked my sump I managed it in about 9:35 (TBC) I've got it on video, just waiting for my friend to put it on DVD for me then i'll post you guys a link if you want to watch? I too need new pads and a new disc!

jonnywilk
By acting like an idiot and driving too fast in a dirt car park that had bumps in!!! the sump is made from a very brittle alloy.. Well at least i know what the german for sump is, oh and the fact it costs €400 to replace
mattcony
Oh poop You need one of them Diesel geek sump guards, think they do a light weight alloy version. cheers matt
Mook
You must have been driving pretty feckin hard to crack it! If you're doing the 'ring or other trackdays, the ECS Tuning brake upgrade is a worthwhile investment. Available in the UK via www.jbrperformance.co.uk - Stage 5 front (Porsche Cayenne Turbo calipers and 358mm (massive) floating rotor front disks, with the Stage 1 rear 308mm floating rotor which retains the stock calipers is a worthwhile investment of £1800, especially when a pair of R32 front disks from VW is £500 + VAT...
