Blow-Off Valve anyone?

Hi all, not sure if any of you are into the Max Power brigade sounds of hissing dump valves ECLIPSe.gif but while I was having a quick nosey round Forge Motorsports website I found this

Its a Blow-Off valve for the Golf GTi, even has a PDF download on how to fit, seems quite straight forward and for all those who want it, the required excess turbo pressure blow-off sound with each gear change the_finger.gif if you like that kind of thing of course wink.gif

What everyone else think of these, would you fit one? Wondered if it caused any warranty issues by fitting one?? Has anyone else fitted one yet, if not, I may try it and see if I can get some sound samples of it in action, at least if it's not that great, it can be easily removed.

OK, I'm probably just being simple, but I don't get it - my GTI already *does* make a blow-off sound on gearchanges if I'm even remotely hustling. Am I missing something here?

Kinda doubt your car has come from the factory with a blow-off valve, they are definately an aftermarket accesory as it wouldn't make sense for a manufacturer to install extra devices that are considered unnecassarily 'noisy' the_finger.gif

It probably is just the induction noise of the turbo you can hear, similar to on my old Audi TT 225, an actual blow-off valve emits a far louder and more easily distinguished pssshhhhhhh (is that a genuine techy term? yelrotflmao.gif ) sound.

I'll stand corrected if I am wrong, but I don't think a company like Forge would waste time and money to develop a product to do something that the standard GTi already does, if you get my meaning.

I have noticed some similar sounds with the window open on mine. If I accelerate to 2000 revs or so (just as some pressure is being built up in the turbo), then ease off the accelerator there is a definite 'pssshhhhh' sound omited, releasing the pressure built up. This sound becomes less prominent if I am accelerating hard and then ease off. I have never owned a Turbo'd car before, so I'm not sure whether this is standard or due to a dump valve. It is a similar sound that I've heard on 'spammed up' Cossies, but more subtle.

If I were being asked straight, I would suggest that there is some form of dump valve as standard on the MkV GTI's.

I also get a strange sound when the DSG box changes when accelerating hard - but I don't think this is a dump valve as I have noticed the same sound on a normally aspirated Audi 3.2 TT with DSG.

Hey all, have actually had a read through the PDF fitting guide on Forge's site for the said blow-off valve.

Seems the GTi does actually have an electronically controlled re-circulation valve fitted, the Forge item is bolted between these and the turbo intake pipe. If I'm correct in my thinking, I assume this standard re-circulation valve is probably the cause of the 'psshhhh' sounds people are hearing already?

I assume then that this means the Forge item is actually a slightly more audible version of this valve, thats my thinking anyway, so what do people think, a worthwhile addition or not? Personally I've never had a dump valve and have owned two previous turbo-charged cars (MR2 Turbo and TT 225) so I am curious as to how good it sounds, for £44 + VAT, suppose I can't not try ECLIPSe.gif hehe!

All turbos need a way of releasing excess pressure or the thing wouldn't last very long. Personally I haven't been able to hear a "dump valve hiss" such as I can hear when in my mate's Scooby, though there is sometimes a nice pop from the exhaust

I would imagine a nice Milltek exhaust would enhance that pop a treat Aswall wink.gif I assume you have a DSG model? Seems like a pleasing sound effect I am going to be sadly lacking in a manual car ices_blah.gif

....Would you recommend a Resonated or Nonresonated Catback Milltek?

Hi RedRobin

I'm not actually sure which I'd go for really, from what I've read on here, think it was from you actually on another post? The non-resonated is more of a louder exhaust than the similar resonated version??? Is that correct?

Can honestly say I'd prefer the resonated exhaust, have had enough cars with loud and boomy exhausts and they don't make for pleasureable motorway hauls, and for me, that goes against the whole ethos that makes the GTi such a great drivers car. Now an exhaust that was throaty and sporty, but quiet on motorways, well that sounds just about perfect to me, what do you think?

Hi VeeDub,

Yes, it was me who reported the difference between Res and Non-res as told to me by both Milltek and AmD. I haven't heard the actual sounds in comparison....I'm too far way from either just to pop up for a listen (though I am soon seeing friends near AmD's place and could then later report here).

I happen to agree very much with what you are also saying about your preference for Res version....That's the theory but I guess it would be great if someone could confirm from actual experience. I reckon we are both pretty safe in selecting Resonated and I plan to have mine fitted within about 4-6 weeks.

I do know that the gain of nearly 10bhp is the same for either type, and, if you missed it posted elsewhere, apparently the throttle response is slightly increased. All this seems ideal for safe and reliable road use.

hi guys fitting my resonated tommorow milltek seemed like a nice company to deal with except for a bit of a delay in delivery will leave ye know how i find it

Nice one - I would be interested to know what they are like on the motor way. The best thing about the GTI is the way it conducts itself on long journeys - its so easy to live with. I would hate to spend £400 only to make it drone like my mother-in-law in the back!
