Launch Control by-pass

Was driving yesterday, and thinking to myself about the principal behind launch control. i.e. getting the revs up and allowing the gearbox to slip the clutch to aid a swift get-away. The solution...........

1. Car stopped at traffic lights of similar in 'N'

2. Left foot on the brake

3. Floor the throttle with right foot (Only goes to 4000 rpm)

4. Swiftly knock the car into 'D' and lift left foot off the brake pedal

5. Car moves off slipping clutch with revs not dropping below 3000 rpm

6. You have just re-created launch control, but with esp still engaged, thus creating less wheel spin as a bonus!!

I'm not at all sure either (when my car arrives!). The manual strictly advises against any simultaneous brake and accelerator usage and if, as some say, it's detectable later the VW guys might trash your warranty. I stand to be corrected on this.

Just playing Captain Sensible....I have to let him out of the Garden Shed occasionally!!

I was under the impression people bought their cars to drive them, not to implement mechanical sympathy at all times. Do you all also accelerate gently, "just as the manual says" to protect the environment and conserve fuel??

the system I have documented does nothing different to launch control, apart from still having ESP still engaged. Its just the same as slipping the clutch in a manual.

Although DSG is essentially a manual gearbox with some fancy trickery - I would be very cautious about using this method. It has been discussed in TSN, and reinforced by VAG that even the Launch Control on the MKV GTI should not be used, and has been disabled on the '06 cars. This is due to a number of technical malfunctions that have occurred on DSG cars using the launch control function.

Therefore, if the proper launch control has caused malfunctions and has since been disabled - your crude attempt at emulating it is likely to mash your gearbox before you know it (IMHO).

I don't mind driving a car hard and using every BHP on tap (this is what a GTI is designed for), but if you go looking for loop holes in a system (such as DSG) you are asking for trouble, which will be hugely expensive and not covered by your warranty. If you are prepared to take the risk, fair play, but I am not.

If you want to make your GTI more aggressive, get a +55 bhp remap, you won't give a sh1t about what it does from a stand still then, you will be too busy trying to hold on and avoid the ugly backsides of all those VXR’s you're steaming past. ECLIPSe.gif

Fair enough! Yes, of course 99.9% of us will drive our GTIs hard - as and when we feel it's safe....No fun otherwise, eh?

I'm just balancing your post with additional information. It's only by having such discussion that everything gets covered. There are others here who possibly know less than you do and it only shows a lack of intelligence for anyone to dismiss the manual without firstly studying it, even if they disagree with it after reading.

Anyway, I find your original post useful and helpful knowledge.

Yes - due to problems that VAG encountered with '05 DSG equipped cars. However, I have used it twice on my GTI and it works a treat.

I think it could be a desirable feature in the future and could help residuals on launch control equiped '05 models. A bit like misprinted stamps being worth millions of £'s.

My 2006 spec car is about to arrive and I have borrowed a 2005 manual from the stealer in which there is no mention of Launch Control anywhere I can find.

In ignorance, I thought that Launch Control was a driving technique rather than a car feature. Have I missed something in the nice leather manual or is LC simply something that is impossible to action in some cars?

Launch Control is definately enabled on my '05 GTI. If some '06 cars have it enabled, these might have been early '06 models - but I can't be sure.

The only reason that I suspect that '06 have LC disabled is because some '06 DSG GTI owners have not been able to find LC using the below technique - of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that it has been disabled, just that they have not been able to activate it - there has been not formal word from VAG.

If you want to know whether it is enabled on yours, do this:

1 - Disengage ESP

2 - Put stick into S (Sport mode)

3 - Put left foot down on brake

4 - Put right foot on accelerator - slowly at first.

If you feel the accelerator begin to bite - as though it is in gear, then LC is not activated.

If your rev counter escalates to 2500 - 3000 revs when your foot is all the way down on the accelerator, LC is activated and waiting for you to let go of the brake pedal!

Again - this in built feature is not endorsed by VAG - but it is a definitely available on some DSG GTI's.

BTW - I have not heard this mentioned on TSN, but the DSG gear stick looks and feels awesome. Almost worth paying the extra for that alone!

It is also possible to get the same effect as launch control with ESP still engaged, thus resulting in no wheel-spin. As detailed in my first post in this thread.....

My way also enduces less mechanical strain on the powertrain and produces a smooth, drama free getaway every time. Unlike the boy-racer effect launch control produces, tyres screeching etc.

Thanks "dmg"....Drama-free with ESPee sounds best for mee. I look forward to trying it out myself after my car arrives and I've done the first 600 miles....IF my 2006 spec GTI DSG allows. Smoothly does it and I see no point in enducing any strain or drastically shortening tyre life. Perhaps it's different if you work for Top Gear and you don't have to foot the bills.

Apparently you get paddleshifts on all new DSGs now but I've ordered the Multifunction Steering Wheel so I also get audio controls (plus Cruise which I'm not likely to use much....I think!!).

No doubt I'll enthusiastically give my full spec when I take delivery....Later this week with Lady Luck!

Nice one "dmg"! The Snooper S-series looks very compact and, in spite of its smaller size, the display seems better than its rivals. This web addy compares them and may be useful for others (apologies to TSN if I should start a new topic with this):

The only thing that bothers me is the cable route to the ciggy lighter. Plus I don't smoke but was given an Apple iPod Shuffle recently which would also need that power output for an adaptor via FM into the car's audio system.

I'll keep an open mind on Cruise Control. I thought I read somewhere else on this forum that CC doesn't necessarily save fuel because of the engine's work to maintain the set speed....I don't know if this is true or not but the main point must surely be to stay out of trouble legally and be safe around schools (I lost a child....it's not something to ignore).

Cruise control is a good saftey feature I agree. I use it a lot more than initally anticipated, to keep the speed down.

As far as the snooper goes, it is suplied with a hard wiring kit, very easy to install and works off the ignition. Therefor leaving the 12v socket free for your ipod. I would hard-wire it myself, but chnange my car every 16-20 weeks, so don't bother.

Good Morning 'dmg'....

Thanks for hardwire info - the way for me to go smile.gif

You change your car every 16-20 weeks??!! Is that your choice or due to your job? Must be slightly disappointing when you come across a car you absolutely love. It takes me that sort of time to get to know a car.
