simkna
EVO mag just dropped through the door. There is a group test between VXR, Megane 225 and Golf GTi. GTi wins again Acheived performance stats are really interesting too. Interior shot of golf looks like they had a DSG. S.

Yahoo
Got a copy of a more obscure glossy mag 'Test Drive' today. They had Matt Neil (et al) testing the GTI, Megane 225 Cup, Astra VXR & Mini Cooper Works (210 bhp). To sum it up, the GTI came second as it is the most refined and complete vehicle - but not necessarily for the pure hot hatch enthusiast. Apparently the engine note is weak and steering is numb. The VXR won, due to its performance and hard edged 'boy racer' looks and attitude. Megane is 3rd and Mini 4th (£20 000 for a fecking Mini!). I don't think that any of us would argue that the Golf is more 'racey' than the VXR, if this is the criteria for a given test, the MkV GTI will always come second (against a Type R also), but the GTI is so much more than a Hot Hatch. I still can't think of anything under 30k new that I would rather have - and not many above 30k either!
leenx
I still can't think of anything under 30k new that I would rather have - and not many above 30k either! Hi guys, I can - TT quattro Sport, 350Z, RX8, VXR, and yes Megane 225. I've been in both GOlf GTI MK5 and 225, and the Megane wins hands down. When you consider you can get one fully loaded for under £20k it's a winner! Ok not german engineering but it's got just about everything else. [/ QUOTE ] RX-8 = 10mpg and poor performance, not in the GTI's league 225= been thinking of one myself, but visit the 225 owners site and see how many problems people are having, plus that gearchange, also harder to chip. TT quattro sport - nice, but bling with that roof 350Z= nice if you can live with 2 doors-used to have one. VXR= been thinking of one as well. Stuggling with some parts of the styling and the low rent interior. Can see some of the buttons shared with my wife's Meriva. MattR32
An RX8 is comfortably quicker than a GTi! I think the GTi is probably the best bet at the moment. I'm waiting to see what the new Focus ST and R32/34/36 is like though.

jamiey
I've been angonising about what motor to get. I can get a hefty discount on the Astra as my work is a "GM partner" and with all the good press I was starting to think maybe I could handle the Astra. But there are two things against it: - it's a Vauxhall with all that entails, badge snobery I know. _by driving it you associated with those infuriatingly thumpable little brats from the zafira/ meriva adverts " someone's forgotten to go to the toilet..." cue sound of small child being repeatedly ran over by parent as the parent yells "he's not mine, he's been possessed by satan!" MattR32
Skins - Are you sure that's not the "Low Power" RX8? Top Gear get an R32 beating "Power Lap" in the Hi power one. Naff all torque though. Jamiey - LOL! I don't like Vauxhalls but my Astra changed my mind a bit - Still don't like the rest of the range though. Simonl
I always thought the HI Power was a sub 7 second car, but i'm wrong. Autocar have it as 7.4... that's shocking for what is meant to be the successor to the RX7 (a supercar). It's crying out for a V, what are mazda doing sticking a sewing machine under the bonnet! MattR32
Check this though: http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/powerlaps/page_2.shtml Surely if the RX8 is so slow, it can't get such a good time!

leenx
Had an RX8, nice car but true it had a thirst for fuel & oil!! Ok the GTI is a nice looking motor no doubt about it, but I just find it hard to justify the money spent on one say with leather, cruise control etc for the money. As you all say though it's all your own opinions. Think they're all nice cars really: VXR, GTI and 225 ( despite contriversial rear end ) - Looks better in black with the anthracite alloys and twin exhaust though! And most RX8s are considerably slower than the GTI because the only movement they have is onto the back of a low loader while being transported back to the dealer for another fecked engine
jamiey
CAR Magassine has a sort of dead heat between the Golf and the VXR. The Golf being the best car, the VXR being the best drive. They tested four cars, Golf GTI, VXR, Mini Cooper S Works and Alfa 147 GTA The most telling part of the article is when they compare the cars to famous women: the mini is a young Susan Hampshire (check the imdb if you don't know who), the alfa is Gina Lollobrigida, the Golf is Ingrid Bergman (who I've always adored and the metaphor has totally sold me now) and the astra... Well it's Buxom and earthy... So they had to choose between Babs Windsor or Diana Dors... Which sums up the VXR to a T. If could extend the metaphor my S1 Elise is Kate Winslet (or my wife) all practical British sumptuous curves and great fun...
RedRobin
....ALL those famous actress comparisons are spot on!! If I were you I'd be inclined to have written "my Elise is my wife (or Kate Winslet)..." - Much safer!! Take this advice from an older guy. Which car is Sandra Bullock like? She's a big favourite of mine and on TV tonight....Byeeee!
