Private number plates

I've been considering getting a private plate for the last few months, since I've owned my own car again, and just recently the niggle has got worse. The only thing that's put me off doing it really is that my name is Ben, making any representation of my name expensive, and my initials are BMW, so again, they're out.

Mainly the reason I want one is to mask the age of my car. It's a 2001 model A4, one of the first B6s, and I'm quite proud to say it doesn't look like it's done the mileage it's done, and could pass as a newer car (which is where the status "I'm posher than YAW" comes into it, I think).

So I have two choices:

a) Go for something that represents the car, or

b) Go for something that I'll (and probably my closer circle of friends) would understand, but would mean nothing to anyone else at all.

What's the verdict?

My username is my BEN plate and that didn't cost the earth by any means. Get yourself on the DVLA's website or down to one of their auctions and see what is available. It's www.dvla-som.co.uk !! That's where my plate came from and quite reasonable on price too. It just depends how much you want to splash the cash 169144-ok.gif

Precisely!

I think I know what I'm going to go for, if do decide to get one. Something representative of the car, but not too obvious. It will cost about £400 I think. I've seen cheaper ones that are similar, but I want the "right" one.

I don't change cars that often (every 18 months/couple of years) so I'm not ever-so-worried about the hassle of changing it over from car to car too much.

And I do drive rather "swiftly" Snail, but I try not to drop into the 'loony' section sekret.gif

If you are going to get one, make it personal.

You will always have your name, but not the car.

Have to disagree. I have bought car plates instead. On the TT it meant [1] it didn't look old (or new) and [2] when I sold it the buyer who bought it has a car that no one knew the age of apart from him.

This was worth at least the couple of hundred quid I'd originally spent on it.

I've done the same on the S4. It was only a couple of hundred quid but disguises the age.

With a common name and initials like mine, getting a decent personal plate is difficult/expensive.

Used to be a great BEN plate around Bradford a couple of years ago on a GT3. Belonged to Benito Carbone when he was playing at Bradford City.

Saw that a few times as my mum worked next door to the stadium - never twigged who owned it crazy.gif

rather spend my money on something more worthwhile.

Like everything, its all a matter of opinion.

For all we know you could be a train spotter and would rather spend your money on a mack and a load of note books.

More worthwhile to you, but not to others! grin.gif

But how about instead of trying to hide the cars age, putting that money towards a new car... 169144-ok.gif169144-ok.gif
