What's so good about the 'delta' upgraded radio?

As far as I'm aware, there's only two standard options on the R (excluding SatNav). The Gamma with 6 stack CD player in the dash was originally fitted to the first models released, and the Delta with a single CD player, which also has an amp built in. It's VW's version of the Audi Bose system, not quite as good as the Bose system, but better sound than the Gamma system. Stick a multi-stack CD player in the boot or an iPod in your glovebox and you'll be happy... 169144-ok.gif

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead to ask:

If I replace my Delta head unit for a Kenwood DDX-7029 dvd system (which has 4x50w), do you think the sound quality might be worse with the Kenwood than the Delta system? I don't want to spend loads of cash and end up with poorer quality audio.

It's impossible to say. It's not just about the quality of the amp in either system, it's also about the speakers etc. Depends how much you want to spend, I guess.

Mrs Mook's old 5 door GT TDI had a standard Gamma system in it and it sounded fantastic. I had exactly the same Gamma system in my R32 and it was crap confused.gif

I dont think it is the fact that it is a seperate amp, more the fact that the built in amp in the unit is more powerful than the gamma. iirc the delta has the different effects such as live/concert/driver etc, not sure if the gamma has this. could be wrong about that though. I have the delta upgrade but i also have a sub and amp in the boot ( came with the car) the sound is spot on mate. unless you are thinking of an in dash dvd/satnav unit then the delta combined with the above is all you should need. also dont think the vw satnav unit has the effects., hope this helps. 169144-ok.gif

Just looked in my manual and noticed the Delta power is 4x20w, or 4x17w nominal, so I think the Kenwood unit will be fine, it's only a little more powerful than the Delta (rms rating). I might take a speaker out just to check the rating of those though, don't really want to upgrade the whole system.

If your Delta is like mike, you will find it is can-bus whereas the sat nav & I suspect the gamma are not (because sat nav is plug & play into a gamma car). If it is Can-bus you won't find the usual wires for gala(speed sense), illumination & power on/off as these are carried on can so you will have to pick these up from the dash.

All deltas came with the 6 changer in the boot + the single disc in the front as was a "package" deal

I think I have an autoleads convertor which I had to use for the Parrot kit, so hopefully I won't need any other leads for the new stereo, or to cut any wires, but I guess I won't know till I fit it! The delta stereos have different connectors don't they.

It is mounted in the back left corner in the storage compartment (under the CD changer if fitted).

It is made by Nokia (bronze colour) or Harmann-Becker (silver colour)

The actual carpeted flap will also have a "Sound" emblem on it, instead of the RED Cross, and will also have ventilation holes in the bottom.

If you don't have a DSP button on the bottom right of the headunit, then don't even bother looking.
