mu71rd
Hi, I've got a GTI import on order. It's coming from www.allbrandsnew.co.uk. Saved me a reasonable amount, which I wanted because whilst the GTI is not out of my price range, it's still pretty close. I'm expecting delivery end november/december, but have now looked at www.euroimports.co.uk and they have some pre-ordered (well - cancelled orders) for delivery september/october. They import from Germany, rather than Malta. What I want to know is whether anyone has had a car from Malta, and if anyone knows if I'd be better going for the 'guaranteed UK spec' car from Germany. Allbrandsnew say the car is full uk spec, but for a while were a little unsure about alarm situation. I'm now a bit nervous as the dealer at euroimports talked about Maltese cars not having full underbody protection. what does that even mean? I could change my order and only lose a couple of hundred pounds in deposit. what should I do?!
mu71rd
and should I change it to DSG? I've always been adamantly manual driver, but the DSG is tempting (esp as I live in London) there seem to be numerous posts about DSG problems which puts me off a bit
Yahoo
Go for DSG - it's priceless for inner city traffic. Don't be concerned about any problems that you have heard of, most seem to be software issues which are generally easy to resolve. Also, DSG is one of the things that set the car apart from anything else on the market. I think this will help residuals, plus it will stop you from wondering whether you could get a better / cheaper equivalent motor from another manufacturer (the forthcoming Focus ST for example). aswall
I agree, the DSG is part of what makes the car so special. It really is amazing and manages to combine the best features of manual and automatic with virtually none of the drawbacks of either
chriswastle
DSG all the way, had to go to work this morning, so took a detour on some quick but quiet roads. The gearbox is a real hoot! Thinking about getting a Tom Tom navigation system so i know where all the speed cameras are when i am off patch so to speak!
RedRobin
Hi ChrisGTI....Could you post either a link or info on Tom Tom please? - hopefully it's a cheaper system than Road Angel!! You guys are confirming all the reasons I chose DSG too
chriswastle
Hi Robin tom tom have their own website just checking it out now!
RedRobin
Haven't come across anyone here yet who has reported buying an "import"....Aren't ALL Mk5 GTIs imported? Hmmm....Unless you can be certain that a "Malta" or similar car is totally and absolutely up to the same standard and with the same warranties AND future service arrangements with VW, then I would seriously question whether a financial saving now is worth it in the longer term....It may even effect resale value. I don't know the above to be true....I'm just raising the questions I would want satisfactory answers to. Btw....Welcome here TSN is a very valuable site. RedRobin
I'm checking it too....Web site easily found. I would have to ask them if they can supply Apple Macintosh compatible software. I can already do all my navigation on my Mac so it's probably not worth it for me. I like the 'perspective' mapping views!
CRJ_1
Hi mu71rd, I nearly ordered with Euro Imports after running imported MKIV for 4 years but couldn't do the whole wait thing so went for one sitting at a dealers for quickness.......I know of someone who also had a MKIV import that came from non mainland Europe & it wasn't full UK spec (he needed to fit radio etc) so be careful. My MKIV came from Denmark originally & full UK spec with OEM VW radio etc & I never had any issues with servicing/warranty work in the 4yrs & 100k miles that I had it. I went through the story above with Euro Imports (who by the way were the most helpful dealers I've every spoken to) and he reassured me their cars come from mainland Europe with full UK spec, even sent photo's for similar models. mu71rd
thanks. it's always nice to get a good recommendation. It does seem as though there is a slight difference between the mainland european cars and those sourced from other places, and as the difference in price is probably less than £500, it might be better to play safe. feel a bit stupid tho - as I've already placed an order through the other company! CRJ_1
No problems, I think you'd feel worse if it turned up & wasn't UK spec!!! I spoke to [email protected] & if he could of got one quicker I would of ordered with him!!! BTW I got offered exactly the same PX on the MKIV golf whether I told the dealers it was an import or not, I assume this was mainly due to mileage/age but IMO if you intend to keep the car more than 3 years and do the miles then go for an import, if you can wait
AlexM
Just joined the forum, great source of information. Has anybody dealt with the following company before? http://www.select-automotive.com/ The quote i ran was £3000 less than my local dealer but comes with a 2 year warranty instead of 3 year. Seems a big difference for only 1 years warranty
b4d4bing
i am about to collect my gti from richard at euro imports next week! he is super helpful...100000x as good as a uk vw dealer! Knows what he is talking about and the car was way cheaper full uk spec from denmark, and came much quicker than from my local vw dealer in glasgow (nc a hicup with the model year change!) i would recomend him to anyone! mu71rd
maybe isn't an import from Germany. Might be Malta like my current order is. Have you spoken to anyone there? things to check are alarm spec, radio... (right hand drive?!)
Hopsta
Not sure if VW's are the same, I know that when people imported their S3's they only came with a 2 year UK warranty. However you can top this up at the end of the term to the full 3 years Welcome AlexM Graham
CRJ_1
Think that's the same on all imports Hopsta, I heard dealer add 3rd year???
