Car Mags: Which is best?

Hi Guys,

I very much enjoy browsing the various UK car magazine titles. But would be interested to hear what true 'petrolheads' (if you don't mind that term) think is the best?

Is it that some are better on some things than others? I'm particularly interested in the directories of reviews they keep at the back of most titles. However, a lot tend to disagree about how good a car is - which should I trust?

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

Evo is the "performance" mag, very very good, but they'd rate a milkfloat on it's ability to produce lift off oversteer.

Car is a little more balanced toward the whole spectrum. They still favour fast good handling cars, but at least acknowledge that there is more to a car than that.

I buy both every month, they're sufficiently diverse to not be reading the same thing twice (although new models will invariably appear in both of course, but even then it's interesting to get differing views).

I wouldnt trust any of them, most seem to suffer with manufaturer bias from one year to the next. Many sufer with a very good photoshop department which put together car pics based on rumour - most of the rumour you can get here anyway so why waste money on the magazine.

Also I find a lot of them dont do much from the perspective of the normal driver - I never drive a car at its limit - so why do most magazines tell me to buy an elise over a VX220 because its better at the limit - what about the other 99.9999% of the time?

Just my 2p.

evo is most definitely the choice for pure unadulterated petrolheadedness. And it's certainly innocent of most of the traits Shao mentions. (BTW - this month - end of term report on Harry's 645Ci!)

Based on the mentions here, I may have to try out Car again... the old man part of me (the bit that thinks MrMe made a good choice!) does yearn for the wider view occasionally.

Top Gear mag seems to be more like the tv show these days - good entertainment if that's what you like, but doesn't seem quite what it was for solid info and road tests.

I only bother every now and then, TSn and web sites have the info, so why shell out a £10 a month to read a couple of mags with old / already read news?

The worse car mags are the What range, followed closely by Auto car and Auto Express which are both absolute sh1te and have near identical articles. They do tend to avoid the same content in the same weeks issue, just to try and fool us mug punters.

Evo, if I had to chose a mag.

Evo by a street mile (and I'm a late convert to it).

I also read Top Gear and I haven't got around to cancelling my subscription to Auto Express yet. I have 3 months of them sat in a corner unopened. It's the biggest pile of printed sh1te this side of a national daily tabloid.
