Tuning Advice

I've got a 1.8T Cabrio and was wondering on any tuning mods that people do to squeeze a little more power out of their motors. Anything like dump valves, chips, etc...

Any experiences and advice would be greatfully recieved.

Cheers, David.

Hi mate, chipping will give you the most bang per buck.

Here's the link to AMD's cab tuning options....

Audi A4 1.8T 2WD Sal - Avant - Cab B6 (163BHP) Tuning Products

With any mod, make sure you check if/how much it will increase your insurance premium first, as that can be as expensive as the mod itself, depending on your age etc.

And make sure you declare all mods.... otherwise your insurance could be invalid. 169144-ok.gif

Bear in mind that apart from AMD there are a number of other respected tuners that spring to mind. REVO, MTM (QS), ABT, APR all do very popular Stage 1 conversions around the £600 mark.

If you want to go loony and mess with big intercoolers and roller bearing turbos then those loonies at Jabba will take your 180bhp 1.8T well into the mid 200s and the 210/225 unit (if cabs got them the_finger.gif ) past 300 for a few Ks blush.gifbowdown.gifbowdown.gif

Take a look HERE and HERE for an idea of what to expect.

All I can say is go for it. If you can justify the £600 odd outlay then it's well worth it.

I have an A4 B7 2.0T quattro and got my car re-mapped with Superchips. There are good and bad reviews about them but there are several dealers such as Audi in Poole that use them. They also do work for VW and Porsche racing.

The re-map cost me £500 and I now have just under 250 BHP and circa 330NM. The car is now consideraby faster at all speeds and suprised a Porsche Boxster on the M40 yesterday. smile.gifsmile.gif

You mean the boxster wasn't trying then? smashfreakB.gif

250bhp in the A4 is a good compromise though I reckon.

Still not ideal for overtaking at speed, but great fun for the 0-60 dash. Bet it feels much more alive too 169144-ok.gif

I wouldn't reccommend tuning a 1.8T CAB. Although the 1.8T clearly tunes very readily and inexpensively, it is not lack of power that is the major shortcoming.

The cab is a refined cruiser that deserves more than 4 cylinders. Tuning the 1.8T will only accentuate it's shortcomings in the refinement and driveability.

Get a 3 litre instead. In the Cab this engine makes the whole car feel just so much more special.

Overtaking what at speed?! blush.gif

My 1.8t with only 237bhp & 230lbft pulls so much better from 2500rpm to the redline now 169144-ok.gif

It's the midrange punch that's the best bit though and on the motorway it'll surprise at lot of drivers wink.gif

And yes the car just feels so much more "Alive" now.

As for 0-60 sprints , I try to avoid them - 1st to 2nd isn't the best on the A4 as most of us know and I like my clutch and gearbox in one piece TA grin.gif

I've got a shortshift gear lever on order that I'm hoping will improve things.......

The bike on the other hand has got no problem with it's overtaking ability 0-100 sub 7 secs is good enough for me the_finger.gif

I've got to disagree with you there.

The drive after my Re-Map was so much more refined - Smoother , more low down torque , better MPG with normal use.

It is a little more 'peaky' - the turbo starts to get going from 2500ish rpm now BUT as it's got more boost anyway sub 2500 it's easier to drive and smoother too 169144-ok.gif

The great thing about having the "DualSystem" box is I can switch back to standard in 4 mins - Just to make sure wink.gif

Hope that makes sense

I have to disagree one of the main improvements I have noticed is overtaking ability. The car now responds so much better from 50-80mph. smashfreakB.gif

That's the trouble with these old v6 oil burner drivers wink.gif

You cant beat a modern turbocharged engine with it's long flat torque curve - Ideal for overtaking! 169144-ok.gif

not sure if that fdata is correct about 0-60 times with 250bhp.

My previous A3 32 had a 0-60 time of 6-4 or 6.5 with 249 bhp or what ever it is.

My new a4 2.0 t Quattro wit h250 bhp will be 50 kilo's lighter that the A3 and therefore I recon will be quicker than the A3 as its the evuivalent of a thin bird not being there on the passenger seat.

Any thoughts

An A4 with 250bhp will do 0-60 in 6.4-6.5 seconds.

Depends what you call ideal. If you overtake at 60mph in an S4 and then get back in your 250bhp 4-cylinder, you'll appreciate the point I'm making.

And no mine isn't the fastest car in the world....

(The cab 3.0 takes 7.8 seconds or something I think to 60)

I was just pointing out that you need serious BHP on a car as heavy as an A4 to make a big difference at country lane speeds 169144-ok.gif
