New air intakes

Dan

How much did you pay for the left, right and centre grills?

I'd like to cut out the honey combe centres with a modelling knife leaving just the grill pattern and then see if I can get them painted / plastic coated to match the alloy wheels.

Mines black, so the lower front detail, black on black is a bit lost. It might look chav, but heck if it's £50 for the set (or under) then a few hours work, I'll give it a go.

Ta for the info 169144-ok.gif

PS Think that the duct holes (although done well)would look better if I new they did something.

Chris - as I said to Mauve, they were about £5 each for the side grills and I didn't buy the centre one but wouldn't expect it to be more than £20. Don't forget to post photos if you do paint them. And hopefully the intakes will do something if EIP pull their finger out and ship me my CCAI. As the intake on the passenger side doesn't point straight at the filter, figured it would help the airflow without filling the filter up with flies and road grime and would prevent it getting too wet (although I've ordered the bypass valve as well). As for cutting the honeycomb bits out, good luck! I doubt it could be done with just a craft knife. I used a Dremmel to cut the holes out and you have to be so careful not to slip and damage it. Do a search for the american and or australian part numbers as these come with the holes cut out already. Local VW garage said he would order anything for me as long as had full part # and would pay for it even if it was wrong.

Don't hold your breath Dan - it took 7 weeks for mine to arrive direct from EIP Tuning. Good call on the air bypass valve - just check when it arrives that it's the 3" version, not the 2.5" version like they shipped with mine first time around (had to wait another week for the replacement).

I run it without the grill cutouts (i.e. using the standard lower passenger side grill), but was going to get around to this at the weekend before a trip to Donington to see if it makes any difference, hence asking about the price. I will also be making up a plate to go just behind the grill with the cutouts to prevent any damage from direct impact (e.g. a stone or gravel etc).

Don't think it will make any serious difference to the volume of air entering the filter unless you're cranking well over 60 or 70 around the track.

Will let you know how I get on. 169144-ok.gif

Ta for that, I'll pop down and see the VW parts bloke later in the week.

I'm quite a good model maker (planes and boats in a past life), if the cut outs are too hard I'll buy a dremmel or alternatively a rota blade thingy thats like a mini jig saw with 80k rpm!

Will a powder coat take on plastic?

You normally need to heat the material to apply powder coat as it is effectively powder that turns to liquid and sticks to the heated material - normally steel or alloy (e.g. metal engine covers).

You can get primer for plastics and your bodyshop doing the painting should be able to help you out/advise you on this.

It would appear that a number of owners on VWVortex have used a craft knife to cut out the holes themselves so i dont believe the US version came with cut-outs.

Dont know about the Oz version though confused.gif

Powder coat is put on by applying a positive or negative charge to the metal and then bombarding the piece with paint powder which has been charged with the opposite charge and then its baked in the oven so it wouldn't work on plastic. Mauve - what does the CCAI sound like? Had induction kit on my old MKIII 16V and it was only throaty when you accelerated hard. Is it a good sound?

See my comment in your "CCAI" post.

Sounds awesome. I run an AmD Stage 4 conversion as well which makes it a bit louder as all that fuel and air gets sucked in...

Had to take the Milltek straight through centre section off after I fitted the CAI because the car was getting toooooo noisy.

The centre section makes no difference to the performance anyway (on my car at least) so I'd rather have a quieter, less noticeable car (if that's possible with an R32)... 169144-ok.gif
