What 18" tyres with decent grip/decent rim protect

Hello all

its my first post so be kind.

Recently bought an 02 A4 with the latest s-line 18" 5 spoke alloys fitted.

Unfortunatley the previous owner went the cheap route on the tyres frown.gif maxxis, worst handling tyre i have ever driven.

Car will literally slide across the road when pushed.

I have also managed to kerb the alloys quite badley as they offer no rim protection to speak off.

So anyone have any suggestions/advice on what to go for, there 235/40/18, and anywhere supplying at a good price. wink.gif

Any help and advice greatfully received.

Thanks

Karl

Welcome Karl beerchug.gif

Of course nothing is going to help if you drive at the kerb in determined enough fashion but have found that Michelin Pilot Sport 2s provide a good degree of rim protection. Although they ain't cheap.

Mytyres are beginning to get a reputation for being one of the cheapest national organisations but you'll often find that independent local companies are willing to do a deal. Also, people can let you know their recommendations if you say in which area you'll be shopping 169144-ok.gif

Welcome to TSN Karl! 169144-ok.gif

Are all the alloys kerbed and do you require 4 tyres?

If so it may be worth getting a set of replica 18" RS6 5-spoke alloys complete with tyres for around £600-£650.

Another TSNer has just bought a set of different style replica 18" alloys and they came with Kumho tyres.

If you wanted a particular tyre, I would imagine they would fit them for you but obviously that would cost more.

Personally, I have only used Dunlop SP9090 on mine but they are 17" and I have not had a problem with them.

Any decent mainstream brand tyre is going to cost you £100 as a minimum so if it's 4 you want and your alloys are a bit trashed, it may be worth considering the replica idea.

Good luck 169144-ok.gif

Yep, my Kumho's seem just as good, if not better, than the Dunlop SP 9000's I had before. Kumho's were 55+Vat each.

A tyre will never save your rims though.

Forget rim protection...how can a bit of rubber stop 1700kg from colliding with a solid object at 20mph....

it would need to be armour-plated smashfreakB.gif

Thanks for the warm welcome guys beerchug.gif

some good thoughts, the alloys aren`t as badly damged (yet) as to justify new rims, even though thats a great price.

I know the tyres wont completely protect the rims but at the moment any very low speed parking contact is all on the alloy so trying to guage whats a good compromise between price/grip/protection, the pilots sound good but very expensive frown.gif

Not sure how much protection the kumho`s offer but they do sound a good buy for grip/£, which type does anyone have experience with as looks like theres a few different ones.

I`m in South Manchester by the way so anyone worth trying locally would be useful.

Again thanks for the advice 169144-ok.gif

I'll let you know how long I manage to go without trashing my alloys with the Kumhos... Have managed 5 days so far.. a record for me 169144-ok.gif

I changed mine after they got this bad...

I guess you could get them skimmed, then again after seeing the amount of damage they would be better off melted down and re-cast coffee.gif

Glad I don't kerb park too often, my alloys are still in pretty good nick, apart from where the tyre changing gimps have scratched them smashfreakB.gif

Don't be too hard on yourself. RS Models have you as 1865 kg. Even so...

Audi RS6 Avant. 1865 kg with 413 lb ft. 221 lb ft / ton

Audi S2 Avant AmD. 1569 kg with 430 lb ft. 274 lb ft / ton

Yes, but I could take an RS6 to AMD and up the figures to 'outbid' the S2 again. As I've said, I like the S2 and am not knocking it.

But you're obviously very fond of the S2 - would you really rather have one over an RS6?

And that's 1865 kg plus driver and paraphernalia (e.g. three other people wink.gif) in the real world 169144-ok.gif

PS Did you check the AMD website for that S2?

I have done 7k on my Michelin Pilot Sports they are the same size as your tyres, I have to say the performance is excellent, there is still a huge amount of tread left on the front & back. Definately the best tyres I've used.

Or if you don't want to spend as much as the Michelin but still have a very good tyre try the Continental Sport Contact2, my brother has these and he says they are very good too.

My first ever quattro experience - 1st July 2003 - will remain in my memory for eternity. Simply had no idea a 2.2 litre Audi 80 Avant would accelerate and brake like that. Started to appreciate Audis more and more than ever. Then a certain someone brought me along to a pub in Milton Keynes with a car park full of the things. The rest as they say is Geography. When you took me out for a demo' in the ultimate Renn Sport of them all last November James, I am sure you remember my initial comments. Certainly not scary - which I expected it was going to be.

Just walking up to the S2 on the other hand makes my adrenalin start to course as my brain thinks 'fight flight or fornication.' The astonishing bark of the turbo on the over-run is something I will miss when it finds a new home. Six already short gears become quick amusing when combined with the AmD upgrades. The heavy clutch means you may wish it was a standard five speed, but the disturbing low speed acceleration means the gearchanges are certainly worth mastering. No doubt the 0-60 would be stonking if you were stupid enough to attempt an Autocar-style launch that saw the RS2 - which has a mere 300 lb ft - achieve 30 mph in 1.5 seconds and 60 in 5 dead.

Yes I am very fond of it to the extent where I actually might cry when it goes. Yes, considering the cost comparison, I'd take the S2 over the RS6 everytime. No, the RS6 doesn't feel significantly quicker.

and my choice would be an A4 cab with an RS6 bi-turbo V8 inside! SMOKE6.GIF

(If I had a spare 50-60K, I'd give MTM a ring actually... they sell them! notworthy.gif)

Quality! Well I suppose the S4 Cab would be able to handle more power. grin.gif

i`ve also heard very good reports about the contact 2`s just not sure about the rim protection aspect.

Might start tel around to see what deals i could get on the pilots.

They are coming in as the most expensive tyre for that size on Mytyres frown.gif

The Dunlop SP 9000 have some rim protection, and they perform quite satisfactory. Even excellent in the rain!

I might try something else next time just out of curiosity, but if I can get a better deal on another set of SP's I'd buy them again w/o hesitating. 169144-ok.gif

Black Headlining, Privacy Glass, Rear Acoustic Parking, Symphony Radio, Rear side window blinds, Storage Pack, Load Area Pack and ISOfix at a guess 169144-ok.gif

As I understand it, tyre choice varies except in S and RS cars. It seems to be a function of whatever deal Audi are getting at the time. I'm happy to be proved wrong on this.

You could always just phone your dealer and ask - he won't know, of course, but it will be fun making him squirm smashfreakB.gif

What's the score on the S's. Mine has Conti's - the one place I don't want German engineering. Grips OK but wear rate seems very high.

I was highly impressed with the Dunlops that were on my previous cab.
