TV Aerial Amplifier

Had a TV guy come round earlier to look at our crap TV picture, he says that we need a Aerial Amplifier to boost the signal. The cost is going to be over £120 !

We've already got a normal booster on the line which has helped slightly. Just wondered if anyone else has got an amplifier installed ?? I'll probably buy/fit it myself, it cant be that hard can it ?

Looks like we're going to need a high gain amplifier, they are about £50 for the most expensive ones on RS/Maplin, plus there's a store about a mile from here ! laugh.gif

Mo what sort is yours ?? you got a make/model, what is it pumping out ? if your at GTi this weekend then bring it along mate.

Cheers all

Be careful with aerial amps. The problem is a weak signal. Poke that down a long length of cable and you end up with an even weaker signal with a poor signal to noise ratio. When you then amplify this, you amplify the noise as well and it actually doesn't help.

The best course of action is to improve the aerial. I bought a decent one from www.scantec.org.uk (you'll need to know which TV transmitter you are looking at to choose the correct aerial). Amplifiers work best up next to the aerial to then boost the signal for long cable lengths or multiple sockets in the house. Using them to solve a poor signal is the wrong way to go about it.

(I was a communications/electronics engineer for Marconi etc and a radio amateur, G8JKP, from 1975 to 1985. Not a lot of people know that)
