Arcam dealers?

I'm a big fan of Arcam and was able to get loads of discounted kit online when I built my system. With the exception of Arcam! I got £100 off at Sevenoaks for an AVR200 although they were heavily discounting the outgoing AVR100 model. Good luck. PS Don't buy their DVD player!

Very difficult to get any meaningful discount on Arcam - even at Richer Sounds!

Arcam gear is still worth it, though. The essential parts of my system are Arcam - Amp, FM/AM tuner, DAB tuner and CD player.

Unfortunately, the turntable, cassette, reel to reel and MD decks have to come from elsewhere.

Never really been a fan of Arcam amps and CD players - their sounds is much to "warm" for my ears - I prefer something much crisper. In fact, I ended up preferring the sound of my old Kenwood AV amp for music over the Arcam amp when played through a pair of Ruark Sceptres.

The Ruark Sceptres are/were medium-sized standmounters with the tweeters unusually mounted below the main drive units.

They sounded bl**dy marvellous, and even my wife (cloth ears) acknowledged that they sounded much better than the Kef Coda-9's (!!) they replaced. However, I bought the Yew finish for them, which went a lovely golden colour after a couple of years, and my wife said they looked terrible, and out of place in our living room, so off they went, along with the rest of the surround-sound setup, and have yet to be replaced - although I think I'm getting close now wink.gif

Hmm, looks like I'm out of luck then frown.gif

Colin, I already have the DV88! Also a DT81 DAB tuner and various Alpha CD players.

I'm thinking of upgrading the player to the DV88+ for the progressive scan output. Arcam also offer a factory upgrade to the DV89 for £650, but I don't think I need DVD-Audio.

The Dv88+ is still a cracking dvd player...but is £1000! i'm gonna save up for a pioneer 757ai although retail is 800 you can get it for 650ish online...i reckon this might even have a better pic in interlace than the arcam (well what the reviews say) it's supposed to be stunning and i believe pioneer are gonna bring out a software upgrade to enable progressive pal in the future...plus it plays all discs (SACD/DVD-Audio etc which the Arcam doesn't). But the cd playback on the arcam should be much better than the competition...alas I'd rather spend the extra £400 i save and buy a dedicated cd player for music.

But the DV88+ is probably one the best for pal progressive (at the moment!!!)

No, the Arcam plays R2 progressive scan but is not multiregion (spoilsports, half my collection is R1)

[/ QUOTE ]

All you have to do is press a few buttons and it becomes multi-region. Have a look at the excellent FAQ here.

Mine is set to auto change region and I've never had a problem playing anything - VCD, SVCD, DVD-R, RCE discs all work perfectly.

How much will they charge for the upgrade Rob? w/o dvd audio

[/ QUOTE ]

They don't offer an upgrade from the DV88 to the DV88+. I'd have to sell mine and get a new one. There is a progressive scan upgrade for the DV88 but it doesn't take it up to DV88+ level because they did lots of other stuff to the 88+ apart from PS.

The 757i looks like a good player but I like Arcam gear. My brother has the FMJ kit which is awesome, but pricey.

[/ QUOTE ] Im confused, i thought that progressive scan only worked with dvd`s en-coded in the NTSC format and that PAL dvd`s ran in interlaced? confused.gif

I'm not too teched up on the topic...i don't think there was ever a technical problem with producing PAL Progressive. I just recon it made more of a drastic improvment on NTSC considering it had fewer lines of resolution therfore more noticable scan lines in interlaced mode...and it was introduced first in the states...maybe because they have High Defenition tv sets available there.

Riz don't you have the HDE Pionner plasma? i don't think it takes PAL progressive (it does take NTSC)...but to be honest Pal are pretty good anyway (my uncle has the HDE plasma and it's stunning)..NTSC progressive is a must have on big screens.

Anyone please correct if i'm wrong here. smashfreakB.gif

check here it's gobbldygoog to me!!

I think the issue with PAL progressive was something to do with the Macrovision copy protection system. The Arcam prog scan DVD players have always been able to do it, but not officially. It was accessible via a hidden menu using the remote. The latest DV89 is the first player to offer PAL progressive scan out of the box.

Yup ya right Riz 1080p it is but dvd players don't output that resolution..i belive the DVD was mastered from a 1080p print....anf the 1080p is available on the windows media format??. I've got some Superbits...desperado, MIB and Snatch but can't fully realise the difference as i havn't got a Plasma yet.

Play and Choicesdirect.co.uk are doing the Region 2's for 7.99!

also as a side note just popped into Virgin megastore and bought loads a films in there 5 for £30 sale...they have a really good selection all for £6 each!

Sorry to Semi-hijack yer thread Rob!! smashfreakB.gif
