harj
I'm looking for a TV/DVD/SAT NAV player for my ride. I'm torn between the ALPINE DV900R and the PIONEER X1. They both have their pros and cons: The ALPINE without doubt has the best picture in terms of pixels than any other unit on the market. It plays DVD/CD's MP3 etc but doesn't have SATNAV . The PIONEER on the other hand has all of the features of the ALPINE (except the picture quality ) plus SATNAV . My minds telling me to go for the PIONEER as it can do everything i need but my heart wants the ALPINE for its top of the range status and superb picture and sound quality that ALPINE are known and respected for..... What would you go for?
dadwhitey
ive got a pioneer avh6600 head unit which ill add the 800 or 900 navigation when funds are available .What are you going to use it for mostly for the picture quality navigation or dvd,s personally i would use the navigation more the dvd parts for the kids rear 7" screens i dont think i can see myself watching much dvd,s in the car . So i would go for the pioneer make more sense for the money
harj
I think i'd mostly use the DVD as the SATNAV would only be used when i'm going somewhere i've never been before. That doesn't happen that much but SATNAV would still a nice feature to have. Does anyone have any of these units for advice? I'd like to know if the you can notice the difference in sound quality
adamchahl
I have an X1, which is great value considering its huge list of features, the only annoying feature is having to load the DVD map disc into the unit every time you want to go somewhere. A pain in the ass if your listening to a CD. You can store an area of the map within the unit, say central birmingham, then you will not need to load the disc, if you and your destination are within this area. dadwhitey will not have this problem when he adds sat nav to his 6600, as the dvd will be in a seperate unit. I also have a US model of the 6600, and its excellent, much nicer IMO than the x1, both asthetically and quality of picture. If you can streach the funds, this may be an option, a pioneer avh6600, then add something like the avic-88dvd? i think. Adam
activa
I've got a Pioneer head unit/dvd etc. that came with the 944 when I bought it. If I was buying it from the shop myself it'd be Alpine. Pioneer have always been great at gimmicks and features but lacked the sound/picture quality of other makes. That to me, would be more important than the features. [/ QUOTE ] Thats exactly what i'm worried about - buying the Pioneer then regreting it coz its doesn't represent pure class in the sound and picture department. Whats the sound from a Pioneer like? Is it clean and crisp so that your can hear every note? (i know this depends on the quality of speakers too but i've got Bose that sound good at the moment with the standard Audi Chorus system, so i'm hoping to hear the full potential of these speakers when i change the head unit to either the PIONEER or ALPINE..) activa
The sound from the Pioneer is O.K but that's 'cos you get used to it.I have changed Pioneer units for Alpine in the past and only THEN noticed how mediocre the Pioneer sound was. Strangly enough,I've always found Pioneer speakers to be excellent but that's niether here nor there. So,Pioneer head units etc. would now be at the bottom of my shopping list, with Alpine/Sony much higher!

[/ QUOTE ] You've just settled it for me i think, as this ain't the first time i've heard good things about ALPINE The only down side is that i'm gonna need extra kit (more money ) for a Navigation unit to go with it.. adamchahl
Previous to me having this in my golf, my old man had it in his A8 with BOSE, it sounded fantastic. Had to have a convertor made, which i have and could sell you if this would be useful? it has ISO plugs on the end, and not phono's though. alexf
I've just changed from a high end Alpine to the Avic x1r and thought it sounded slightly bassier than the alpine. radio reception is poor compared to alpine. The sat nav works better than most vehicles i have been in like bmw and toyotas. Get the cd multi player and you can keep the nav disc in the head unit. The screen seems a bit dark when watching dvd's, it can be adjusted but not by much, it might just be that the screen is too low down in my dash and cant be seen head on. it has a customisable car information screen which isn't bad, tells you g's, velocity, voltage, speed, angle..... I think you should judge each sat nav system by the current software, i think pioneer wins in that dept. Hope this helps alex
harj
Thanks Alex Is the radio reception that bad or are you able to live with it?
alexf
Hi Harj, I can live with it, it seems to be better now that I have re routed the main aerial cable, it could be just down to interferance from my cars cable routing. I don't think it would put me off buying one again. Too many positive points to put me off :-)
