skifly
All... as both an info post for people and to help with my pre-delivery purchases i wonder if people could supply their views and experience with bluetooth kits and GPS speed camera detectors. GPS: 2 main choices... Road Angel 2: Good and matches the car - about £350 from network automotive - extra TSN discount Micro Road Pilot: Small and laser thingy too - about £300 without TSN discount Bluetooth: Go with one of the parrot kits? (with external screen) - are there others that are better and easy to interface with GTI. Also maybe with a small screen to show the caller and phonebook etc?? Or just voice dialling? What sort of prices do people think they can get a decent setup for? Know the post is a little vague but seems it hasnt been discussed for a while in one thread and the groupbuy's seem a little old now? skifly
oh and what is this about some GPS detectors not warning you when they have lost the sattelite signal?? Which ones have this problem as could be an issue for me!
Soapsuds
Skifly.... step into my office....!! GPS detectors: RA2 are good units i have heared. The only reason i didnt get one is because they have a very bright blue screen that flashes red when the camera warning comes up...... this will probably match your golf nicely though (blue dials IIRC??) Also, the RA 2 doesnt tell you the speed limit of the camera, which can leave you guessing when the alarms are going off! MicroPilot - didnt even bother looking at that because the Snooper S4 and RA2 are reviewed much better everywhere else and i thought it looked a bit naff (personal opinion!) RE the signal loss, the Snooper has an option to display GPS signal all the time (apart from when the warning comes on). Unsure about others...... I would consider the Snooper S4 - i bought mine from Dixons online for about £250 (around that). Be careful of the Networks Automotive prices, as even with TSN discount, they are cheaper elsewhere...... Ok - onto Bluetooth Phone Kits...... Parrot make all Nokia kits, so are basically the same, but are designed to support all bluetooth phones... What phone do you have?? I have a Parrot CK3100 installed in my Audi (self-install). It cost me £95 buy-it-now off eBay (can supply you with the dealer name if you like) and i required an Autoleads cable for the install (die to Ausi amplifier). It was simple plug and play, but i am unsure how it would work with the Golf. If you use the technical forum on this website or view the autoloeads products (or even call them!) they will let you know..... The CK3100 has caller display, voice dialling for 200 numbers, phonebook synch and displays your network, signal strength and battery life (depending on handset). They are the best around, unless you want a dedicated Nokia Kit with cradle for charging etc...... Hope that helps my frind! Just shout if you want more info. mb
I have a MRP and am very pleased with it for the following reasons - very stealthy install (fits inside ashtray of the car (Golf IV) & can close ashtray cover when not in use) seems to work pretty well too. On the downside it is illuminated green and so doesn't match teh blue of teh Golf's instruments and occasionally it goes "off line" but doesn't tell you ! It also will not be affected by legislation regarding detectors as it is only db driven - however this does mean it won't detect traps it doesn't know about, mobile traps etc. Bluetooth - I have the basic Nokia kit For - again very subtle install just a button the dash & it was cheap (60), and works very well with my Nokia 8910i (I have heard that Nokia BTphones can be troublesome) Against - Integration was a little tricky but this was mostly because my car didn't have the mute pin wired up and it needed to be soldered whereas I believe the Parrot has an adaptor, you can't see who is calling (more annoying than you first imagine) and it seems to cane the phones batteries. Hope this helps Martin
skifly
ok - cheers for the advice gents. Currently I have a 6230 but i am coming up for renewal late sept so will have a bit more of an open choice. Only thing that i am not keen on would be the parrot display - not sure if i think it will look a little out of place though. Will have to have a bit of a think about it. As for GPS - my mail reason for going for the MRP is the sheer size of it as it will be really easy to hide in the car and not block view etc. I have to admit i do like the snoopers though! Simply though i will not buy one now as there is no warning that it has lost signal and hence will not warn you of cameras! So my options are now limited to the road angel which simply doesnt appeal very much or the snooper which does look rather good. Functionality is another question though!! Opinions are always welcome on this one - will start getting the orders in soon too.

[/ QUOTE ] To be precise - you can see it is off-line - ie no speed displayed & picture of some satellites etc. but it doesn't give an audible warning it has lost position which I think it should really. I have the GPS antenna mounted under the dash so the install is totally "stealth" so maybe this means it doesn't quite get a great signal ? PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] oh and what is this about some GPS detectors not warning you when they have lost the sattelite signal?? Which ones have this problem as could be an issue for me! [/ QUOTE ] ALL GPS detectors have this problem. When they have lost the satellite signal, they don't know their position so they can't warn you about cameras because they don't know where to look in the camera database!!! This is a basic restriction of GPS - unless you have a sat nav system that has both GPS and a gyro compass. Which is why I keep asking this question on all the forums I'm a member of - "Anyone know how to add POIs (such as the Pocket GPS camera database) to the Audi DVD maps?" skifly
righty then - decided that will have a look at the car and see where these GPS puppies can be fitted. Just a couple of questions though - with the S4 neo i dont seem to be able to find a site that tells me how it connects (hope its USB). Then its a stright choice between S4 neo and the road pilot. If not then i may have to go with the S4 Evo (anyone know much about them) as it is defo USB and blue matrix so will match blue dials a little better. Bluetooth - will go with parrot but again working out where to put the sucker!! Any ideas for a GTI anyone?? Oh and how easy will it be to hardwire all of these - is there spare fuse sockets etc as i also will have an denicon ice link in there too! (probably in centre pocket as dont want it on display!) Cheers - Chris
Soapsuds
Hi mate - i have just swapped my S4 Neo for an Evo and it is NOT USB and it is NOT blue screen! Its basically an identical unit, but with a European Database....... The Snoopers are Serial cable connection, but you can pick up Serial -> USB adaptors on eBay for pennies! Hardwiring is simple with the Snooper as they give you a thin, ready fused cable (for hardwiring) that is easy to hide. Not got a new GTi so cant help you on location of fuses to use etc, but im sure its very simple! (it was in my A4) Hope that helps!!!
skifly
hmmm... so now i need to work out what i saw then... probably just me being a muppet! Cheers for the help and you will be pleased to know i did give karen a call regarding the insurance - sorted my no claims problem and also gave a very respectable price...! Think i may be owing a couple of beers to people on here now!
