charlie61
I just had my mechanic service my A6, i've used him for years and have 100% confidence in his abilities, he did a full service on my 2000X avant quattro 1.8T including cambelt change for £327, he advised the brake discs would need changing soon so I gave him the go ahead, I was really surprised to see the invoice for the discs and pads. 2 discs £17 each + vat, front pads £22 + vat total £58 + vat I can imagine a bill of £250+ for audi to do the job. The discs and pads were made by apec, only problem is the brake pad warning light stays on, this isn't anything to do with the new parts as it's been on for a while with genuine audi pads fitted, is there a cheap and easy cure for it, it's been on a diagnostic computer which showed no faults other than the pad warning light, obviously a short somewhere, I just want it disconnecting altogether. fudge
I think you will find that the pad warning light remaining out depends on a small current flow through the sensor wire on the pads. If the connector in the wheel arch becomes corroded (or the connecting wire becomes cracked) the light will be permanently on. Audi's rationale is that with this system it fails "safe" (ie warns you of a fault). Hope this helps.
noco68
RichardW's thoughts mirror a situation a friend has with a '97 A4 he's just bought. When he got it home he noticed a piece of tape covering a section of the warning-lights on the instrument cluster. Turned out the brake-pad warning light was permanently on. He figures that he traced it to a cable running to the offside front wheel terminating in a piece of tape flapping about in the air rather than the connector on the pad... Edna'... Smiddy
I had some cheaper pads and disks put on my last car when they needed doing but it just wasnt the same, they did not stop as quick and they would get hot quite easy, for my 03 A6 i got now i went for audi pads and when the disks need changing i will probly go for audi parts.
