RedRobin
There's info over on http://www.uk-mkvs.net/forums/266664/ShowPost.aspx that Tesco have introduced a new 99 RON petrol which is cheaper than Optimax. At least it's cheaper for now but has already had a price hike. Apart from performance, which posters there are giving thumbs up to, the big question is surely does it have any of those "detergents" which Optimax does. In my opinion looking after my GTI's engine health and life is more important than saving 5-10 pence per litre. The good thing about this is that it may cause Shell to reduce the pump price of Optimax. I may be wrong but I find it difficult to compare fuel manufactured and supplied by professionals like Shell versus a food supermarket chain. I may be biassed as one of my ancestors was head of Shell operations in the Mediterranean....Pity it's not hereditary....Hey all you fellow GTI owners! The Optimax drinks are on me!! aswall
I will not buy anything from Tesco or Walmart on principle due to the way they have acted in "competing" with smaller businesses. Although it's early days, I have used 3 tankfuls so far and the results are not what I expected 1) Optimax - 28.2mpg 2) Jet standard unleaded (no choice) - 30.1mpg 3) Optimax - 27.9 mpg I'm going to fill up with BP Ultimate today and try that
RedRobin
Hi Aswall....Interesting and useful info (I notice that our posts here are much more in depth and focussed than those on the other site!).... I've read elsewhere, from drivers, that Optimax has the edge on BP Ultimate regarding performance. I'm certainly going to start with Optimax. Btw, I very much respect you keeping to your principles re Tesco/Walmart
CRJ_1
I started with Optimax, mainly due to the posts I'd seen on TSN, and have never felt the need to change. Performance & MPG is great so why fix something that's not broken, be interested in the BP Ultimate opinion from Aswall tho I do feel the need to stick with either 95 or 98 as per inside the fuel cap, why 97 from BP or 99 from Tesco - are VW's (my wifes polo also states 95 or 98) designed to use anything other than 95/98??? dimma02
Ur all lucky with the choice,, here in Ireland GTI's are also selling like hot cakes but the only petrol in the south (where I live) is 95 RON, nothing else whatsoever. The reason I don't have the Focus RS anymore is that it ran very sick on it, The GTI runs fine and at least VW says it will,,,otherwise we would all be screwed,,then again petrol is about 72p/litre.........!!!
