Hello there, I'm looking to purchase a Bora ('00) and was looking for anyones views on them. So far what I have read makes them sound like nice cars? I used to own a Golf (csl) a few years back and loved it. I realise that the Bora will be different to the golf for handeling etc. but was wondering more about the reliability of them? Any info will be great, thanks.

well i bought a 99 bora a couple of months ago and the gearbox went , so if u are goin to buy one ask them did they have any gearbox trouble or even if it had been changed, if it had been changed then ur ok , nice handling of the bora good on juice , and they are quite a smooth ride

DON'T buy a 1.6 8V or 1.6 16v, The Engines are shite and the gearboxes go bang around the 60K.

The 1.6 8V ARE THE WORST. (Irratic Idle, Slow and the prone to misfire than are hard to find)

Buy a TDI they are the most Reliable and the bora is better made than the Golf.

Welcome to TsN smiddz. 169144-ok.gif

The Bora is basically the same car as the Golf, just with a boot. Resale values are not as high, because they are not as popular as the Golf, unlike in the USA. They are made in the same factory as the Golf, so there is no reason that they should be more or less reliable than the Golf.

If you're buying a 2000 model, you will have the option of the 115 TDI, which is a great engine which will return 55 mpg, if that's your thing. Like Mulkbear says, steer clear of the 1.6. If you're going for petrol, go for the 2.0.

Best of luck with whichever one you go for.

Yes - Do It !

Just changed to a Bora Sport TDI (150) from a Golf GT TDI 115 (remapped to 165)

The Bora much better, larger, more refined, better handling, better MPG about 53 average for a tank. More toys esp on the Sport model - watch out for the Highline yes it has full leather but it is meanly specced other than that one I looked at didn't even have a CD player!!

If you’re not keen on the wood trim and lets face it that is a bit retro these day then you can do a swap to any of the golf colours including the brushed ali R32. also the Bora has nice chrome touched in the instrument binnacle you don’t get in the golf – and there must be a reason why a lot of peeps do the Bora vent conversion….

Performance wise short of going for the V6 don’t think you can beat the 150 TDI – love the look on peoples face when they get blown away at the lights and then see the little TDI badge on the back 

All in all I’m very very happy with the change … and maybe shouldn’t shout about it too much otherwise everyone will want one…..
