To GTi or not...

Hello everyone! Im new to the forum but have found it a great read so far.

My current daily driver is a 2002 A4 estate. I need to get a new car, smaller, and went to have a look at the Golf. First I was thinking of a 4motion 150bhp car. Im used to the 4wd with the audi now and living in Switzerland, it is excellent in heavy snow.

Anyway, got to the local VW garage and had a look at the car, but unfortunately (or rather fortunatelly...) he only had one demo car at the time available, a red 2 door GTi with DSG, so the only mkV golf i have driven is that, and...WOW!! Suddenly my brain said, you need this.

Now I don't know what to do. Sure when it snows 4wd is good, specially when there is lots of it, but then I didnt always have a 4wd car and it was fine. I was proposed the new R32 by the garage, but I think that is going a little to far...and Its already hard to justify the GTi to my better half...

What a great car!! And the DSG box was a joy.

IMO they are losing a lot of money crazy.gif

Every car does in it's first year. 10% discounts are easily achievable on an A3, which would straight away affect the used prices. You try getting 50p off a GTI at the moment, it won't happen. Until the new lot of GTI's come through next year, residuals will remain strong, demand is still very high.

Book prices mean dung.gif it's what the market wants that is the true dictator of a cars value. I was getting offers 2k behind book on my A3. Dealers just weren't interested.

The A3's main problem is that it's so frickin' ugly

And that new "Sportback" (hah) estate version is even worse. It's interior may be better quality (though boring) but that isn't enough to exclude it's challenging looks and crashingly bad ride. Go for the Golf 169144-ok.gif

Never thought I'd ever hear myself saying that, but the Mk5 GTI is finally a Golf worth buying.

Welcome DB6Vantage. You have obviously read many of our posts and feel encouraged to buy a GTI and a DSG version. The only question I would have would be how well or badly the GTI DSG copes in snowy conditions but I guess there are plenty other front wheel drive cars in your neighbourhood although you personally are used to 4WD.

Yes that is what I would like to know too. It should be allright if you have good winter tyres. The roads are cleand and salted properly during the winter, only sometimes snown falls faster than it is cleaned, and it might be a bit of an adventure to get by...I only worry for when I go skiing and sometimes it gets pretty bad.

Before the A4 I had a Mk2 GTi, and it wasnt that bad on snow. Even once, when i was still a student and had a little too much to drink beerchug.gif , (NONO3.GIF)and put the chains on the back wheels. (for some reason I was convinced about where they had to go...) and managed to get home in over 30cm of fresh snow, and driving through steep hills. (well I did get stuck eventually and my friend proposed to put the chains on the front wheels...worked much much better) beerchug.gif

well I will go back to the audi forums where in your opinion i belong then. but I still say they are losing too much too soon! the_finger.gif

No one is saying your opinion is not valid, quite the opposite. But after 3 months with an A3 3.2 Quattro, i was offered 19k. It cost me 27k.

Last year i was offered 17k for a 6 month old BMW 3 series sport which cost me 26k new!!!!!!!!!!!

The GTI is too new to start guessing whether or not it's going to have cracking residuals or not, but huge praise, limited supply and numerous BIG accolades would suggest it might do OK.

If it doesn't, fair enough, but let's not have the funeral before the death! beerchug.gif

I've always been puzzled by this obsession with residuals. I buy a car to drive and enjoy. If, after 3 years, I get a reasonable p/x price from a dealer than I'm happy. If I lose money, that's too bad, but at least I've had a couple of years of fun. It's like the housing market - I've never bought a house on the basis of what it might be worth in 5 year's time - I can't predict where the housing market might go, and I'm not particularly concerned either. So, buy a GTi, enjoy it for every mile that you own it, and don't fret about the residuals SMOKE6.GIF

....I agree absolutely with what Alan has posted. Why let any concern or worry about the value of any property (either car or house) dampen your enjoyment and quality of life in the present. No one's continued life or lifestyle is guaranteed....Please believe me - It's something I have experience of. As John Lennon said: "Life is what happens while you make plans."
