theduisbergkid
Just got TomTom GO 700 ! Immediate observations - Womans voice is irritating, I'll switch it to the Swedish woman I think ... Map is incomplete, its missing half of the local industrial estate thats been up 10 years. No speed camera locations, I think I can get these off the net for free somewhere. Slow start-up, maybe this is because its my first time using it. Nice system though, anyone else got one ? Any ideas where I can get some freebie downloads and stuff too ?
Mollox
I'll get you started: Download the Pocket GPS World Speed Camera POI Database here and while you're at it: Consolidated Shell Station POI database from the same site
CarMad
Yep or have a look at Pocket GPS and download POI Edit. It will help you download 50+ POI one of which is every type of speed camera including temporary sites. Its updated once a month.
Mollox
I have POI edit and it didn't like it when I got to the "doing stage" and did '+PDA'. It threw a fit. The GPS World Database you do manually and you have to remember to get both the .ov2 data file and the corresponding .bmp file for each .ov2 file Doing it manually is a tad tricky for the non-PC-friendly, but nothing more than copying files
CarMad
Mollox... don't bother with all that +PDA stuff (Its only for PocketPCs anyway) . Just choose a location to save them all. You only need to do this once. Then auto update each time you log onto it and it will get the latest files down, normally only the camera info. Then go to the location of the files on you HD. The .OV2 files and .BMP files will all be there. To update the cameras each time filter by date, and copy and paste into the tomtom directory on your SD and job done. You might need to set up all the alerts the first time. And if you want to download the speech alerts. The basically tell you want zone you are in. I.E. It says 'Gatso 30' but make sure you also select the default GATSO non speed dependant. This has a bleep that is easy to hear if you have the stereo up. theduisbergkid
Mollox, CarMad, you are gentlemen, thanks a heap ! Actually, you might not be gents, but ladies, or hemaphrodites .... but hey, who cares ? Thanks. I will try it all later from my home PC (bloody gestapo control the works one) and will post the results. TA.

CarMad
Go to Pocketgps and have a look in the forums there. I think it appears as a drive on your PC when its connected as a device is that right. If so all you do is put the files in the main tomtom software directory and you will be away. I think you are limited to 30 at a time no more. Let us know how you get on.
Mollox
Please note these instructions apply to the Tom Tom Go 700 ONLY. This model has the 2.5gb hard drive and full Western Europe Maps. Before uploading anything to your Tom Tom, be sure to make a back up using the backup feature on your Tom Tom installation CD. Jays, If you're doing it manually then you need to copy the correct .ov2 (POI) files along with their corresponding .bmp (icon) files into your 'Western_Europe-Map' folder... To do this, connect the Tom Tom to your PC using the USB cable supplied, select the files you have chosen to install and paste them all into the 'Western_Europe-Map folder on your Tom Tom. It will take a second or two and then they will be copied. Now you need to enable the new POIs on your Tom Tom... On screen, tap in and choose Preferences > Manage (or Maintain) POI > Enable/Disable POI and then select your POI from the list. Ideally (for speed cameras) you then need to set up warning alerts... Tap into Preferences > Manage (or Maintain) POI > Warn when near POI Here you can select the POI you want to warn for and then set how far in advance you want a warning (I'm still deciding but I think 250 yards is about right) and then a sound. Stock sounds are a bit rubbish - I currently use the bugle. One thing to note about the Speed Camera Database is that you can either choose one .ov2 file which shows all camera locations and the one .bmp that corresponds to the speed camera sign or you can download the individual files for 20,30,40,50,60 and 70 mph gatsos, traffic light cameras, various speed mobile cameras etc. The benefit of going with all the separate camera files (and then pairin them with all the corresponding individual .bmp files) is that you get itemised alerts. E.g it will specifically tell you that you're approaching a fixed gatso in a 40 limit or a 70mph SPECS camera etc etc. Well worth it
Mollox
Oh, also, if the address book on your phone is not compatible with the Tom Tom or you need to make changes to your Tom Tom's Mobile Phone Address book you can manually change the contacts.txt file on your Tom Tom. Contacts are in the following form "Contact Name","0800111222" "Mollox Pizza","0800222333" Where the first set of values in speech marks is the name displayed and the second the number dialled (without spaces). Both sets of quoted bits need to be separated by a comma and no spaces and each entry goes on a new line I have no idea what the maximum number of contacts is but given as its stored in a csv .txt file I would guess its limitless. Mollox
Yes it does I think all Sat Navs do this?
CarMad
Yes it does, it reroutes in no time at all. Sometimes trying to get you back on the same route, other times taking you on a diversion. Best think as well is that you can tell it to avoid a road if you know its a knightmare or a stretch of it and or tell it whilst on the journey that there is a roadblock ahead if its an accident at it will route you round it. Great if you are in an unfamiliar area and just want to get home. Its a great piece of kit.

N3WOB
Yep impressive input from Molly ... could you not also buy a Road Angel Navigator and produce a 'Haynes' like guide to help me make my mind up on that though?
theduisbergkid
Well chaps, having done c.300 miles today, it 'mooed' correctly at every camera I passed, and worked a treat. Thanks loads for your help. I have also done my bro-in laws unit, and 2 guys at work will give me their units for a freebie camera upgrade too, you have probably saved our motley collective about 200 points on our collective licences ! Mollox
The reflective screen question is the obvious one here... I know a lot of renaults have this type of screen - you can see it glaring all sorts of colours when you look at it. Best thing to do to would be to pull over when you lose signal and sucker it to the outside of the screen and see if this improves it. If it does then you might want to look for the TomTom external antenna for the 307: Here
