mark_j_R32
hi, i'm thinking of lowered my car by 25mm so which suspension set up like coilover, springs is best and what is the name of coilover, springs, etc?? thank you
FiftyPence
You can purchase a set of PI springs iirc which lower the R32 rather nicely although it is recommended to also fit a pair of Forge or similar adjustable rear control arms which allow the adjustment of the rear aligment/camber so you dont end up wearing out the inside of the tyre tread after just a few thousand miles. Personally i have some FK Konigsport coilovers (re-engineered Konis really) which are being fitted on 28th together with the Forge Motorsport adjustable rear control arms. There are many companies who now manufacture coilovers for the R32, eg H&R, Bilstein and Koni to name but a few. Sure enough, they were PI springs and here is a link although of course you can get them from elsewhere but this gives you an idea as to who actually makes some for the R32: click the link to POTN.com
Mook
Welcome to Tyresmoke Mark There are lots of places to start on this and a lot of it depends on your budget! Do you want to go for just lowering the car, or for lowering it and having adjustable suspension? Couple of places you could try are Awesome GTI or AmD Helfinger should hopefully post on this because he runs another setup not sold by Awesome or AmD - his car is lowered by 30mm and he swears by the handling. If you're looking to improve the handling as well as lower the car (or are you looking to lower the car to improve the handling?) then you should definitely consider anti-roll bars front and rear, as well as top and bottom strut braces on the front. Oh, and if you want to have some fun, upgrade the Haldex 4WD control unit so more power gets kicked to the rear wheels quicker. HTH

mark_j_R32
mauvegecko, thanks for the nice welcome & info as well i've forgotten about anti-roll bars, which i've fitted on my old mk2 golf gti and it's brilliant handling... i think it might be worthwhile to purchase anti-roll bars and i wonder as golf R32 has anti roll bars- what size are they in standard? and what size of upgrade anti-roll bars do i need to purchase and what companies who manufacture R32 anti-roll bars? not sure if i want adjustable suspension?? i think i need to do more research on suspensions to find the best one to suit me.. Dan32
Awesome stock Neuspeed anti roll bars in 2 sizes, 25 and 28mm. They also now have an adj rear anti roll bar which i think is called 'race'. Most people go for the 25mm because i think it retains some give for road driving whereas 28mm is a bit harsh. Prices - rear race ARB £275, front ARB £155, front upper strut brace £80, front lower strut brace in billet £160. Thats my shopping list anyway! Oh and the Haldex ECU upgrade at £499 although last time I looked, Awesome had put the price up on that. Do all of this and understeer will become a thing of the past. Or so I'm told! Mook
[ QUOTE ] i think it might be worthwhile to purchase anti-roll bars and i wonder as golf R32 has anti roll bars- what size are they in standard? and what size of upgrade anti-roll bars do i need to purchase and what companies who manufacture R32 anti-roll bars? [/ QUOTE ] It is definitely the first mod worth doing if you want to work on improving the handling. Lowering is a separate issue. From memory, the standard R32 ARBs are 22mm front and 20mm rear, although I'm sure someone will pipe up if I'm wrong. Neuspeed are one of the main manufacturers. As per Dan's post, the 25mm front and rears are a good option. There is a fatter rear ARB, but this makes the car a bit tail happy apparently [ QUOTE ] not sure if i want adjustable suspension?? i think i need to do more research on suspensions to find the best one to suit me.. [/ QUOTE ] It is a lot cheaper to change the ARBs first, then if you're not happy with the height or want to beef up the suspension, then do that afterwards. I've got the Bilstein PSS9 fully adjustable suspension on order for my car, because I want to stiffen the ride for track days, then return it to normal for daily driving. Lowering the car is not to my taste as I like the car to look as standard as possible. Another company making adjustable rear arms is www.ecstuning.com - their UK distributor is www.jbrperformance.co.uk - talk to Richard. Finally, lowering the car or not, get yourself the Haldex Performance Controller upgrade. See if you can get to go out in someone's car that has these mods on it then decide for yourself. Not sure where you're based, but you're more than welcome to have a run out in mine if your in the South of the country. HTH
mark_j_R32
mauvegecko yes, i agree that it's definitely the first mod is to have front & rear anti roll bars on my car as i want to improve the handling... most likely for me is to have front & rear 25mm neuspeed anti roll bars. i'm not sure about lowering my car as i'm happy with the standard ride height of my car but i'll rather wait until i get my new wheels from the states,so wait and see... thanks again for the useful info which i appreciate.. dazmondo
My car gets lowered regularly by 25mm sometimes more ? Just load the roof rack up with timber and put all the de-walt & makita power tools in the boot and hey what a transformation. Best of all You just have to see the Contractors faces when i pull up on site with a fully loaded car of kit. The four wheel drive realy comes into its own on "site mud", R32 gets where some JCB`s cant reach
