w0012458
Hey everyone, i hope someone can help me! Ive finally bought my first Audi, and its a 2001 A3. Problem is that ive only had it 3 days when the oil overheating light starts flashing, so i naturally go to a garage and change the oil and filters. Problem is that the thing is still reading overheated about 2 mmiles into a journy, the coolant bottle was way below the miniumiumlevel so i have topped this up too but it has made little difference too! Has anyone got any ideas or has the same thing happened to anyone else?
Drillslinger
Not sure about the coolant level, but if it's got high miles then I'd look at the history to see if the water pump has been changed. Mine's an 01 (Lots of miles) and I've had my water pump die on me. Definately worth checking on
harminder
If the coolant light comes on after a couple of minutes then it could be due to a faulty sensor..? I know its a common fault with S3's where by the coolant light comes on after a few seconds after start up..? Im sure someone will be able to correct me if not.. stratty31
I'm confused You mention the "oil overheating" light, then mention the coolant bottle being empty! Do you mean the coolant temperature warning light? This would make sense if the coolant bottle is low or empty. If you can confirm this I'm sure i can help you If the level in the bottle is continually dropping then you have a leak somewhere! If you see no signs of coolant loss underneath the car then I would suspect the water pump..have a look round the cambelt end of the engine for white splash marks. It could be leaking internally into the engine, but i've never seen this on an Audi. Let me know how you get on
Funki
I'm getting exactly the same thing on my 2000 A3. I replaced the coolant temperature sensor and that didn't cure the problem. Obviously the engine can't be overheating when you've only just started it so I suspect that the coolant level sensor in the expansion tank is at fault. The confusing thing is that when that warning comes up along with the beeping, it could be either too little coolant or that the coolant is too hot - it gives the same warning for two different problems! I really should get it sorted Any idea what the cost is? Mine only seems to do it when starting from cold, on a relatively cold day...
Tomk
mmine does it to only on very cold days though ...
harminder
I checked my coolant level and it was fine... Even so topped it up a little and that seemed to have cured the problem for a few days! I get the annoying coolant warning beep every time its cold and my car has been parked up for over eight hours.. A few times it has happened on warmish days.. Generally I start the car and know when it will happen.. I always give the car 30 seconds or so before I pull off.. If in the mean time the coolant sensor beep comes on I just sit and wait until the warning goes away (as been as long as 3 mins)! I know the sensor is faulty but I always use it as a measure to judge when I should pull away!! Will probably change it soon as more annoying than anything else ! Hoban50
My A3 oil cooler leaked oil into coolant - sludge in expansion tank - nothing visible externally - expensive when h/gasket went shortly after.
