After a very long 18 weeks, I finally picked up my Candy White GTI today, and I am in love heart.gif

Good things

<ul type="square">[*]The colour! It looks even better than I ever imagined. The 18's look HUGE as they are such a contrast in colour to the body work

[*]The acceleration is even better than I remember

[*]The brakes are brutal, just a little tap scrubs off any amount of speed

[*]The exhaust noise is better than I remember

[*]The ease with which the car changes direction at any speed is massively impressive.

[*]Parking sensors are great

[*]I got my bottle opener, oil (and case) without any arguments, it was all just there as it should be.

Not So Good Things

<ul type="square">[*]The clutch seems very light, I am sure I will get used to this, but it has not made for the smoothest driving so far.

[*]On first listen the audio is not great as is widely known

[*]There is an intermittent rattle from behind the dash (in the middle)

[*]I have no idea how the automatic lights work, they seem to be on all of the time so far (but then it has been a dull day so perhaps it is correct?)

[*]Trying to stay under 4.5K revs is HARD FIREdevil.gif

[*]Only managed 24mpg on the drive back from the stealers (30 miles)

[*]I wont get to drive her again until Saturday as I am doing an 18 mile charity walk tomorrow night frown.gif

Mods (already)

<ul type="square">[*]Removed the nasty dealer logo from the rear window and appended my own Evo one.

[*]Removed the nasty dealer tax disc holder and added my own Richbrook one

All in all I am very pleased so far, and all the signs are that I will be happy long term if it continues in the current vain.

Pictures can be found <a href="../gallery/album147" target="_blank">here</a> with any luck the lovely GalleryStig will change the album name for me wink.gif Pictures are not great as it has been a dull day and white tends to reflect the weather on film. Hopefully there will be a nice bright day soon and I can get some nicer pics.

p.s any idea when you try and post the work s t i c k e r with no spaces it gets converted so something very different??

awesome...good to hear that you love it as much as we all do!...

If the clutch seems snappy, this might be because the gti clutch is based on a racing style one, so it snaps into gear fro the quickest manual cahnges!

And as for ethe rattle behind the dash..i can only guess that it comes from the middle area..well there is a little speaker there, and it could be the plastic wire housing smacking against the plastic surround!...Anyway, enough balbbing!

I hope u enjoy her for ages to come..i know you will!Happy GTI'ing!!

Hi Sam....Great to relive one's enthusiasm through yours! Looking at your pics I am of the firm opinion that you would want to think very hard before coding any of the black parts - I can now see that they do much to make the white bodywork look so chic. In fact I would go as far as saying that the black valances look the very best of all on Candy White GTIs.

Be cautious of the automatic lights....Could communicate the wrong message to another road user: Krrraaashhh!!...."But you flashed me to signal I could come out!!" - Hey, I've at last found something I don't like about the GTI!!

Enjoy! Big Time!! 169144-ok.gif

[Gee, yet another satisfied Mk5 GTI owner!]

Thinking of the twin pipe milltek non-res catback next laugh.gif

....Re keeping the black valances all around: Only possible at present if you get the Milltek single pair of jet pipes and not the quads like mine because the quads need a special rear valance (Abt) that has to be painted. Black painted rear would look truly horrible because it couldn't match the 'black' grained plastic standard sides etc.

I assume you meant twin jets and not quads. Am about to test and report 'drone' on Non-res tomorrow all being well. Non-res Catback is NOT loud or antisocial.

First off - sorry to cross post but I reckon not many of you read the Aussie regional forum I'm on and I seem to spend more time here so I wanted to share my excitement!

I've been waiting to add my name to this thread for months....I finally took delivery Wednesday! Initial impressions- better than I remember from the test drive (taken some time after I'd actually ordered of course!).

Pick up is terrific, obviously haven't explored the limits of the handling but ride quality is beautiful. Launch control is definitely enabled - but not tried yet (gunna put a coupla hundred kays on first!!!) Sound quality is acceptable to good, I have satnav so perhaps some of the issues others have mentioned are solved by this option. I haven't even begun to test cruise control or any of the various other toys and I learn something new about DSG every time I go for a drive. Disapointments are few! I think the plastic used on the seatbelt buckles feels cheap, (and the noise it makes when hit with the metal bit sounds cheap!). One of my remote door openers had a small gouge out of it, I pointed this out to the dealer and his response was "wait until it's been in your pocket a while, it will be more battered than that!"

I didn't call him on it because after such a long wait I really didn't want to spoil my day, but I think for a 50K car things should be perfect.

I have noticed I have one open and one closed duct next to the foglights and am curious as to whether the dealer has just left a transit cover in place - the holes in the mesh are there but there is a plastic plate behind which looks like it is held on by a self tapper! I'll let you know the outcome.

first mod will be APR chip after a suitable running in period!

all in all I reckon it's a solid 9/10.

Shipper,

Great to see there's another GTI in OZ. Not too many around yet. I've only seen four others in Melbourne so far, one other red, a silver, black and a white.

The ducts - the left is open and leads somewhere into the engine bay while the right is closed - with something that looks like a self tapper. I presume its the reverse in left hand drive cars. I think we can safely say that they have put both our cars together in the same way.

The DSG will intrigue for a while - I reckon I've only recently got to fully understand it after about 8 weeks of driving. Up to date the hardest part is know what gear your in without looking at the dash. It's a combination of the DSG not being gated and the different sound of the car.

Took the car down the Great Ocean Road a fortnight ago - really appreciated being out of the city - ride/handling/comfort all realy good.

I'm coming up to 4,000 k so its is beginning to free up - it seems a little more responsive and the sound seenms to be a little edgier also. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Apart from the DSG and satnav (which I don't have) what other options are you running?

Sam,

18 weeks is a long time but worth the wait.

I had a rattle in the top middle dash for the first day. It very shortly disappeared and hasn't returned in the equivilent of 2,500 miles over the past 14 weeks.

I hope it turns out the same for you.

Fuel consumption only now seems to be improving on my car. Initial consuption running around 13.5l per 100km but now edging down to 10.2l per 100km. I don't think I'm driving it any differently but with the cost of fuel at least its going the right way.

Enjoy.

....That's exactly why I have fitted Milltek exhausts - As a driving aid. But, of course, also to enjoy the sound. There are other Milltek/exhaust threads in this forum if you are interested. Apologies if we have chatted to each other already in a Milltek subject thread - I don't keep track too well.
