Srobbo18
Hi i have a golf v5 1999, when i started it the dash light came on saying 'stop' and check coolent level, it was low, and looked a bit muddy. i filled it up and kept steady reves on, with coolent res still open, every minute or so big bubbles come up through the water. then when i put the lid on the water level dropped, i presumed this is air leaking from the head gasket and into the cooling system, what do you think. if it is the head gasket what sort of price should it be to get fixed. thank you
rmmacauley
Is the exhaust white? The head gasket went on a freelander I had a while back and it presented as white exhaust and no coolant left. If unchecked all the coolant leaks into the cylinders and gets expelled as steam hence the white exhaust. More extreme cases leak oil into the cylinders and this can be catastrophic if it happens at speed. Mine cost about 300 quid to fix.
Srobbo18
No smoke that i have noticed, the garage (not dealer) i tookit to said it would cost £500+ with vat on top it sounded too much for a gasket what do you lot recon Thanks for any help
Mook
Stop driving the car immediately, before you do any more damage. Get it checked out asap! Check your oil - has the oil filler cap got a white residue on it. If it has, then water has mixed with the oil. The head gasket is not an expensive item in itself, but the labour and all the extra bolts, washers and seals soon add up. I would think at least £300+, going on when I had the head gasket replaced on a Mk3 GTI a few years ago. HTH
Skidmark
Before you spend £3 - £500 + and then find it was something else !! Drain the coolant and refil with new stuff [pink not blue] make sure there are no air locks/leaks.... let it tick over and get up to temp & pressure. Get a compresion test done to confirm the gasget state, and as MG said, check the oil for water/sludge. Is the engine still running ok [on 5 pots] ? I think if you can get it (the gasket) changed for less than £400 with the vat you will be doing well may be less for cash in hand.. good luck
R32North
The main costs assocaited with blown head gaskets are the stripping, skimming and rebuilding the head. You need to do this as the head may be warpped. The actual gasket is cheap by comparison!! Compression tests will tell if its blown or not. Is there any oil in the coolant system ? Srobbo18
There is no sludge of any kind in the oil, there is no smoke, i will get a compresion test done asap, the dealers quoted 600+vat for gasket change beas i have found is £475+vat including changing valve stem oil seals as well. Still not convinced of proplem as no smoke or oil contamination or no loss of performance but i think i need to get compresion test and i recon best be safe rather than sorry, where can i get this test done
