AndyBarnsley
Hi, I have a A3 2.0TDi Sport and sometimes when turning at low speeds or stationary I get what sounds like a grating sound?? Is this the power steering pump or something and is it normal? Thanks in advance, Andy
Roswell
Sounds like my fiancee's Ka which currently has a leak in the Power Steering Fluid system. Check the fluid level.
tinka
it should be elecro-hydraulic,in which case its a maintenance free unit i think,so no fluid to top up, could be a problem with the electric pump.
aymski86
Hey, i think i have similar problem with my a3 sport/2005, Usually when im reversing and turning the wheel at the same time...doin a 3 point turn for example, i hear this horrible noise, i think its coming from the steering or the clutch or something...mine is booked in to see the dealer next week...untill then does anyone have any ideas what it might be? AndyBarnsley
Hi, It appears to be worse when the engine is cold for some reason? Can u let us know what the dealer says when you take it in aymski86? Thanks, Andy
Gren
Had this on an old Rover but it was more of a straining noise - the pump trying too hard. Topped up the fluid a couple of times before I realised that a jubilee clip had come loose on one of the hoses and I had a slight leak.
aymski86
Ok, took it to the dealer this morning, but couldnt leave it with them as they would of took all day to get round to doing it....so leavin it with them next week instead. As Gren explained, it is most LIKELY the clip has come loose on one of the hoses. The dealer did explain if this was the case it is not big problem and is nothing to worry about as it is easily fixed. Anyways, will keep you posted! AntW
hmm, I get a similar sound on my 2005 A3 as well, usually when backing out of the drive and steering left. Not noticed any marks on the path from any leaks but will keep an eye out.
Gren
Sometimes from cold they make this noise anyway. Something to do with the fluid expanding slightly under heat (allegedly) and so colder fluid making the pump work harder to do the business. AntW
that sounds about right Gren, especially as mine doesn't do it every time. No noises this morning for example, and no big puddle of power steering fluid under the car either
AndyBarnsley
Hi, I've noticed it does it only when turning the steering wheel left aswell. I can't see any power steering fluid leaks under the car. Where abouts is the power steering fluid tank under the bonnet or is it a none maintenance system? Thanks, Andy
AntW
Andy, exactly the same here... when turning the steering wheel left as I reverse out of the driveway. Doesn't do it if I am going right... at least we have the same problem (if it is a problem)?
AndyBarnsley
Hi, Just a quick update. I took the car to my local stealer last Wednesday and one of the technicians had a look and the noise didn't present itself even though it had done it earlier on! typical! The technician said to re-book it in but bring it the night before so they can have the car from cold. So I have booked it in for next Tuesday and taking the car Monday night. One thing that has puzzled me though is the fact that after the techncian had looked at it the noise stopped for 4 or 5 days before starting again?!?! Strange or what! AndyBarnsley
Hi Another quick update I left it with the dealer Monday night so they could have the car from cold and they rung me back Tuesday afternoon saying that they think its a problem with the steering rack and that i'll need to rebook it in as the part needs to be ordered. All I can say is i'm glad its all been done under warranty otherwise it would cost over £400 to replace! Andy
pmouat
Put mine in this morning and they've rang back to say that its a problem with the steering rack but thats its a known problem with the A3 sportbacks so they've had to send a report off to Audi UK. They then have to wait from word from them to see how they want it fixed. But they assure me its safe to drive till Audi UK gets back to them.
