Omi
Hi folks... I've got an NTL Cable Modem > D-Link D624+ Router > Motherboard LAN socket. When I first switch on the PC I can browse no problems, but after an indeterminate period, the connection disappears. - Network card shows it's sending packets but not receiving them. No activity on my cable modem and nothing on the Router either. Can't connect to any website or internet service. Even when I try to connect to 192.168.0.1 to check on the router I can't get through. This leads me to believe the problem is possibly with the LAN socket. - I've tried the other LAN port but it makes no difference. I have DHCP set to give a permanent IP for the PC on the router. Have rebooted everything and it works again for a while, but then dies out again. - MSN Reports gateway unavailable and I'm on the verge of throwing the thing out of the window. Any ideas? Hopsta
Is your network card set for speed/duplex? Or is it Auto detect?
Sponge
Do you have any software firewalls running? What happens when you don't assign your PC a static IP? What does IPCONFIG report?
Omi
NIC is set for full autonegotiation. Running Zonealarm Lite, but no different if I shut that down. Using the other NIC is a different MAC address and a DHCP assigned IP, but the issue remains the same. Seems to occur when the connection hasn't been active for a while, of if I've been P2P'ing. Didn't get an IPCONFIG output, will post that tonight when I get in.
shark_90
Try a different cable and also try plugging into a different port on the router. The ipconfig data won't help.. but when you do experience the problems try pinging your router, then try a tracert to a website to see if the problems are internal or external. When you to a tracert post it up and I'll have a look - and also when you do it try to trace to a website you wouldn't usually look at (for example www.steakandcheese.com perhaps, or www.whatismyip.com) as this will force the machine to resolve the names and might point out the problem (ie do you have no connectivity past your modem, or can you get DNS and therefore you can still communicate within your ISP) Might even want a new network card if none of that works, and it is an internal problem. Other than that, it could be a problem between your router and modem, or more likely (if none of the internals are causing a problem) it's just NTL being shite. There might be a setting in your router to ask for a DHCP lease more often (most ISPs are 4 hours by default) so if there is try altering that to something lower.
