Sparky
Guys, What does it mean when a car is idling at 1500rpm, rather than the usual ~950rpm that it normally does? Anything I can check?
schmoo
is it that revs all the time or when cold? it may drop a little when its wamred up a bit also is your aircon running at the time u noticed your high rpm?
Sparky
Air con and headlights off. It's 16 degrees at the mo and the car hasn't been anywhere today, but this is still unusual for it. Even when cold, it's not normally between 1500rpm and 1900rpm. It's only done 22k in 4 years. It's normally near-silent at idle but this was quite noticeable.
shark_90
What car is it? Petrol/diesel/engine size?
Sparky
Just a 1.2 16v petrol mate.
shark_90
Is it pulling straight up to those revs as soon/very shortly after the engine is started? Do you think it might be the fast idle that's malfunctioning? Mind.. I'm probably thinking far too early to be honest, I know jack about newer cars with new fangled computery bits in them, and I know only a little more about the older ones! Sparky
It goes straight to 1500rpm, maybe slightly higher and sits there. It doesn't fluctuate at all.
shark_90
Well it sounds like the engine management thinks it's doing the right thing, if it's not fluctuating. Does it calm down after/when it's driven or does it always revert to 1500? My dad had a Vectra 2.0 that did this, and it turned out to be a shagged engine management unit. He sold it shortly before it was replaced
Sparky
Just took it out but it's returns to 1500rpm. Strange one this. Never ever been above 1k at idle.
shark_90
Sounds like a dealership job to me mate, and be prepared for bills >£800. I don't know what it could be, but it definately sounds like a service computer job, and if the Vectra experience is anything to go by, a new ECU

Durrsaku
Throtle sensor maybe?
rhyds
What car is it? It could be a malfunctioning coolant temp sensor making the ECU think that the engine's too cold Another possibility is a sludged up throttle body, try spraying some carb cleaner down there
Sparky
It's a Corsa. I'll have a proper look today.
mulkbear
Are the brake very hard like there is no servo?, can you hear any air leaks?, has any work of any type been carried out on the vehical
Sparky
No work has been done since last service (18k, as it was 2 years old), but the service light came on at 20k. We were told this was because it is programmed to do so at 20k,40k and 60k and to ignore it. The high revs has only just happened, and the light has been on for months. Brake pressure remains the same as it always was and i cannot hear air leaks of any kind. It didn't do it this evening, but did in the morning and yesterday evening so it's not everytime apparently.
