Henke
Hi there, I'm a relative newbie, so be gentle! I'm referring to the fibre glass panel on the boot which houses the boot key lock. Around the registration light housings there seems to be some kind of 'rusting' or reaction which seems to be spreading. It's like a bubbling/rash like reaction that the paint seems to be having with something. I'm almost 100% sure that this panel is fibre glass so it can't be rust. Has anyone ever come accross a problem like this before? I'll try and provide pictures. Thanks
Chav
Hi Henke! Might just be the paint bubbling rather than rusting ... but I have no idea really, so I'll just shut up.
DeanW
Has it been re sprayed at any time Henke?
Henke
It has never been resprayed as far as I know mate. It had one previous owner but a history check showed the car history is clean before I bought it. Unless there was a very minor incident and the guy resprayed it himself. Local mechanic can't seem to put his finger on it either. Will have to bring it to the local Audi dealer because it does seem to be spreading on the fibre glass panel. If I do have to remove the panel and get it resprayed and taken care of, anyone prepared to hazard a guess at what it could cost me? Cheers
cabby
Henke - probably helpful if you post a few pics. I'm sure someone (i.e. not me) will have a good idea what the cause is.
chrisan
If the car has dealer service history, won't this be covered by paintwork/body warranty?
Henke
Right, have managed to get a pic sorted. As you can see (hopefully!) the area affected is mainly around the reg plate light housing and spreads up over the edge toward the boot lock. The body part itself is fibre glass as far as I know and is attached to the main boot frame. I first noticed when I brought the car into Ireland (from England a year ago) and was so small that I forgot to mention it at service time last March. It has spead a good bit since then. Any ideas what's going on? cheers guys! (Sorry for the oversized pic, I have no photo editor on this PC!)
Milo
Has the boot been repainted? It definitely looks like either a paint reaction causing it to blister or corrosion of some description. I would recommend a trip to the dealer for their opinion as it should still be covered by their body/paintwork warranty
Henke
AS far as I know there has never been a spot repainted on the body work since it was manufactured. The car was clean history wise when I got it with FASH and all receipts. Problem is, dealer is in Bradford and I'm in the west of Ireland. I guess I'll need to take to the local Audi centre. Still, very strange, havn't a clue what could cause it!
Milo
Henke - have a read of this. It appears Hatchet Harry is having paint problems on his 5 year old S3 which also looks like corrosion or paint defects. Maybe you 2 could compare notes to see if it is a similar problem. It is interesting the dealer is trying to fob him off saying the problem is caused by stone chips. I would like to see a dealer try to explain your paintwork problem away as stone chip damage given the area it's in
Henke
Thanks Milo! I'll get on to him to see if it's a similar problem to mine....

Nelson_R32
This is quite a common occurance on B5 A4's; unfortunately its not covered under corrosion warranty as Audi don't class it as 'Bodywork' :S The Part is about £25 IIRC, expect to pay about £30 for painting and then a few more quid for fitting...
