kirbs1969
Alright guys...new poster here! Got myself a bulk standard red Mondeo 1.6 LX (1994) in VGC and want to jazz it up a little bit....basically want to get 4 nice fat tyres & was wondering if anyone could a) recommend which type would be best and b) recommend any tyre manufacturers etc... Any help greatly appreciated!
s4dreamer
Welcome to TSN Kirby! I'm not sure whether or not this is a wind-up, but I'll bite anyway. If you want tyres that have a fatter appearence, then you would generally put a wider wheel on, which in turn will take a wider tyre. How wide a wheel you can (legally) put on is dictated by the wheel arches and the offset of the hub within the wheel arch. You are not allowed to have the tyre sticking out beyond the outer edge of the wheel arch. So, you might start by looking for a 16" diameter rim with either 6.5" or 7" depth that fits your Mondeo. Then go for a tyre with a wider profile (that's the first number in the tyre size) - maybe 205 width for starters. Bear in mind that you need to keep the rolling circumference as near as possible the same as with your current tyres and wheels, otherwise your speedo reading will be incorrect. Some of the better tyre websites have tables which show this for various tyre sizes. Oh, and if you do go the new wheel route, make sure that the "offset" of the wheel is the same as the standard wheels otherwise you may find the tyres rubbing on your wheel arches (or sticking out too far). Chav
Welcome mate! Are you going to get 4 nice fat wheels too ... otherwise the new fat tyres will fall off! I've got Kumho tyres which replaced my DunlopSP 9000's, and they feel just as grippy in the dry and the wet. The Kumho's were 55+VAT a corner for 22540ZR18 so ...15/16 inch for mondeo standard fit should be even cheaper. Not convinced its worth getting GSD3's or similar for your car. Gren
Or get some spacers to move the current wheels out.
Mook
Welcome to Tyresmoke Kirby When it comes to figuring out what size of tyre to use and making sure your wheels go round at the same rate so your speedo isn't knocked out, check out this web site which lets you put in details of your current tyre size and the size you want to go to (requires the free Java plug-in to be installed with your web browser): http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html Tyre manufacturers are many and varied - again it all depends on whether you want better performance in the wet or dry, as well as how much cash you've got to spend. Gren
Seem to remember a certain 'Carlos Fandango' selling wide tyres in the '70s / '80s. Not sure if they're still around.
