[Audi A3/S3] A3 1999 1.9 TDI vs 1.6

Which version of the TDI are we talking about here? Many variants have been put in the A3 over the years: 90, 100, 110 and 130bhp versions. The 1.6 is about 100bhp if I remember correctly

In the "real world" the TDIs are going to be quicker than the 1.6 because of the much higher torque. They definitely *feel* a lot quicker. I used to drive an A3 with the 110bhp TDI, and was given a 1.6 loaner car by the dealer which felt absolutely gutless in comparison.

For reference I looked up the manufacturer quoted 0-100km/h (0-62mph) times and torque figures:

1.6: 12.8s 148Nm

TDI Non-PD 90bhp: 12.4s 210Nm

TDI Non-PD 110bhp: 10.5s 235Nm

TDI PD 100bhp: 11.0s 240Nm

TDI PD 130bhp: 9.2s 310Nm

I just noticed I made an error in my post. The quoted 0-100km/h time for the 1.6 was that of the model with an automatic gearbox. The manual is a bit quicker, but the point remains: TDIs are quicker in the real world (overtaking!) and definitely feel quicker.

Corrected figures:

1.6: 11.0s 148Nm

TDI Non-PD 90bhp: 12.4s 210Nm

TDI Non-PD 110bhp: 10.5s 235Nm

TDI PD 100bhp: 11.0s 240Nm

TDI PD 130bhp: 9.2s 310Nm

Which ones faster? / 0-60 Faster?

My mate reckons its the 1.6, but my 1.9TDI is bloody quick off the mark for a diesel!

Can anyone settle this little argument?

Oh do me a favour! A 1.9TDi will destroy a 1.6.

Tell your mate he's talking out of his buttcheeks.gif

better still, just whoop his ass at the lights!
