Quickly scanned the article and they love the RS4 its Chris Harris that writes the review and he is about as un-biased as it comes.

In the end they give the M3 CS the nod.. but overall for what most people want from a day to day car the RS4 might get it when they review it in the UK.

If nothing else they say its the best fast Audi to date and a huge improvement over the S4. It rides better than the S4 but supremely out handles it a great achivement for Audi. Only real complaint is that of a problem of too much understeer but as it says in the review all the things may come together to make it the best car to have in the UK if no the ultimate track day tool.

All I can say is that your all lucky barstewards and Jon... please please come to the Cheshire meet when you get it mate. grin.gifnotworthy.gif

I think Crispy has a good point, the review in autocar makes out that the new RS4 is nearly as good as the M3 but if it cant beat the current model i think its going to have a hard job when the new M3 comes out in 07. The new 3 series is already getting rave reviews for comfort space etc....

Add the fact the previos RS4 looked fantastic and this new model just looks slighty more aggresive than Audi's current S line A4 range it aint looking good, maybe seeing one in the flesh might change my mind ?

And then there is the price £50,000 + for the saloon when the rumour is that the new M3 will be £45,000 + .

I think it all depends on what you want out of a car. The RS4 has torque, the M3 (and csl) can not dream of competing with. Acceleration out of roundabouts and in downshifts will always feel different. The M3 is never really in my opinion about getting up to speed, it is more about keeping it there. I would personally I think take the RS4 over the M3 price no option. The new M3 I think will not look up to much. But I haven’t driven the RS4 so it is not fully fair for me to comment (I just have an inkling it will be similar to the R32).

Shows how good the E46 M3 was and when the new M3 comes out the RS4 will have NO chance. FIREdevil.gif

It's not just Autocar though. Andrew Frankel was wined and dined by Audi recently and wrote a review of the new RS4 in his motoring column in the Sunday Times.

In it he lauded the RS4 for it's power, pace and improved feel. He said as a daily drive it was without doubt a more convenient drive than the M3.

However.....he said that he'd take an M3 (Coupe not even a CSL) over the RS4 every time if he wanted to enjoy his driving. That, he said, was even more astonishing when you consider the large price difference between the two.

Autocar has always been BMW bias.. i would prefer to read some other reports first.. and matey from the Times even starts his report saying that he's a BMW man.

The 50/50 weight distribution in M3 is very good.. I've driven enough of them and I'm not going to slate them.. they are indeed a fine automobile, but they only come in coupe or cab.. no good for me.

I also think that these critics don't really understand the ethos of quattro drive. When i first had my S6 many moons ago, quattro takes a new way of driving.. for example, when the car starts to slide (4 wheel drift) you need to hit the loud pedal so that the wheel regain grip and power out.. bit un-nevering to begin with!

Quattro in the right hands is awesome.. look at the rally cars of the 1980's. unbeatable, the touring cars of the 90's.. they had to weigh them down so much to make them uncompetative! The le-mans cars.. Audi can make cars that handle.. just depends on who is behind the wheel.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Seems like Autocar aren't the only ones to think that the new RS4 isn't even up to the old M3;

Even so, this is not a perfect solution and anyone thinking that the RS 4 is going to provide the thrills so readily available in the cheaper, older and considerably less powerful BMW M3 needs to think again. The RS 4 may now be at least as technically accomplished but it is a lot less fun to drive. Its steering has a slightly inert feel and when you do push it hard its priorities remain firmly to save you from yourself, whereas an M3 will continue happily indulging its driver well past the point where most observers would say you were having just about as much fun as is prudent on a public road. So I’d rather drive an M3.
