Warped discs?

It's def not a warranty job Dan, yes they're probably slightly warped - wear and tear frown.gif

You can get them machined using a rotary lathe which is used when it's on the car - do a search on Google for Pro-Cut Brake Lathe (and choose the Search UK option). This should bring up some UK specialists. Think AmD have got one but it's a fair trek for you from the South coast.

Is the inexplicable noise like a cracking sound? Got this on mine as well and, after initially thinking it was the floating rotors on the ECS disks (which I now know it definitely isn't), I now think its the top suspension mount bearings - that's the only place I can think that there would be a metallic cracking sound. R32s are prone to the top mount bearings going as well apparently.

If you need replacement disks cheaper than VW, you could do worse than go for ECS Tuning standard replacements, or slotted, or slotted and cross-drilled. $319 for a pair. I've got no problem recommending them based on my ECS brake upgrade. Make sure you fit new pads when you replace the disks! UK distributor for ECS is www.jbrperformance.co.uk - talk to Richard.

Top man, Charles. A fountain of brake info as usual! Not a cracking sound, more like something rubbing on the discs but only at a high spot so its an offbeat kind of thing. The noise increases as you are applying pressure and they are heating up and only when really hot, say, between roundabouts on the A43 towards the M40 when you are hooning about trying out the new strut brace having been messing about on the M1 with Al and Andy on the way back from Donnie. Or something like that!

Heck, you must have been braking hard from 70 mph then tongue.gif

Try the brake lathe option to start with, it's a lot cheaper! There could also be a build up of material on the pads which could be causing the high spot - the stock R32 pads which are not really up to long bursts of "enthusiastic driving".

I just hope you remembered the cameras on the A43... EEK2.GIF

Saw those darned cameras on the way up, and they are one of the reasons the brakes got used properly on the way home. It was about 70mph we were braking from on the M1 but then this blue golf came past making a god awful racket. Sounded like people screaming inside it. Hope they were ok!

The pads on the outside (right hand side) of each disk, or both pads on your right hand front disk?

If it's the pads on the outside of each disk, that's fairly normal, but only by a couple of mm. If it's the pads on you right hand disk, then you've got brake imbalance problems.

What happens if you brake down to zero from 60 mph or so? Does the car pull to one side?
